Similar to the display problems with the Yoga 920, I'm having the same problem with my new Lenovo Yoga 720 (Dec 2017), which I recently bought from Best Buy.
I can't connect my external HDMI monitor via the USB-C port.
Yoga 720-13IKB (Type 81C3) Laptop (ideapad)
Machine Type Model: 81C3000LUS
I tried loading the new Type C Firmware for Windows 10 (64-bit) - Yoga 920-13IKB, Yoga 920-13IKB Glass , but the install failed.
When will Lenovo have new firmware available for the Yoga 720 ?

Hello and welcome to the Community,
I don't believe you are experiencing the same issue as was experienced with the Yoga 920, I would also definitely not recommend attempting to install any firmware on your system which doesn't have your exact system listed in the readme file or isn't provided through the support site for your exact system.
Also after searching this board for 720 HDMI it would appear that USB-C to HDMI does work;

I updated all the drivers and BIOS and now I am able to get the following two USB C to HDMI adapters to work.
ACCELL Type-C to HDMI 2.0 Adapter (P/N U187B-005B, V1.1, F/W: C002 0008.7.55.1725)
Apple USB-C to Digital AV Multiport Adapter (P/N MJ1K2AM/A, UPC: 888462074940)
BTW - It took me a while to figure out that I should be using the USB C port closest to the combo audio jack, as when one plugs in the HDMI adapter to the other USB C (AC Power Adapter Jack) port, a confusing pop-up message appears "Display Connection might be limited. Make sure the DisplayPort device you're connecting to is supported by your PC. Select this message for more info".
The message ought to say "This USB C port is for laptop power only. Use the other USB C port for USB 3.1 • PowerDelivery • DisplayPort output • Thunderbolt output".
Thanks for your help.

I have a yoga 720 13" and I purchased Lenova USB-C to HDMI adapter and plug it into what appeared to be the display port. (nearest to the back)
I got the message "Display connection may be limited"
It would not work with any external display, TV or projector.
I plugged it into the AC power jack and it worked properly.

My usb c to hdmi adaptor was working then stopped. I have tried updating drivers, updating windows. The brand is LC Dolida.

fireman191, check if the cable works with another laptop, if no maybe the cable adapter is not working. I have the Lenovo cable: "Lenovo USB-C to HDMI Adapter Cable Part No: GX90M44577" and it works perfectly.

After going through several different adapters (and reading these posts more than once), I now have 2 adapters that work well with my 720 13" (type 81C3).
1. MultUSB C Hub Multiport USB C to HDMI, USB C to USB Adapter, 8-in-1 Apple USB C Adapter for MacBook Pro and More with Ethernet & TF/SD Card Readers by Letscom, Aluminum Greyiport adapter by Letscom (Amazon)
2. Lenovo USB-C to HDMI Adapter, 100% compatible for Lenovo Yoga 920, Yoga 720, Flex 5 and IdeaPad laptops, GX90M44577 (Amazon).
Neither of these worked initially. The secret is to plug it into the USB-C Power jack and NOT the regular USB-C jack. This was a bit counterintuitive for me, but it works flawlessly now. Finally. And what a pain in the behind.
