Re: Yoga 720 dock compatibility

Snake -- I, using TB3 USB C dock, was able to connect 3 external monitors but at low quality. I think I posted this earlier in the thread also.

Re: Yoga 720 dock compatibility

I have it working with all Yiga 15 plus 2 more monitors all displaying 1920x1200. I can display 4K on the Yoga as well but I find turning resolution down on the Yoga makes moving the mouse from screen to screen easier. Easy enough to change the res higher if I feel I need it. Can run youtube on all 3 screens, full screen.

Using 2 display ports for external monitors with Lenovo TB3 Dock. Power switch in dock does nothing and it does not power or charge the laptop.

It took me far too long to figure out that the USB-C/power port on the Yoga 720-13 is not the Thunderbolt port.  The Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 dock works if you plug it into the Thunderbolt port which is the one next to the headphone port, not the one closest to the screen hinge (they both have the same form factor). I have only tried to link it with one external monitor. There are two displayport ports on the dock.

Re: Yoga 720 dock compatibility

Hello guys. So I have been using the Lenovo Thundebolt 3 Dock for a couple months now and these are my findings.

On the 15" Yoga 720 we can connect the following options:

- Laptop screen @ 4k 60Hz + 2 Monitors at 1080p @ 60Hz

- Laptop screen @ 4k 60Hz + 1 Monitor at 4k @ 60Hz (my current configuration).

- Laptop screen @ 4k 60Hz + 1 Monitors at 4k @ 60Hz + 1 Monitor at 4k @ 30Hz. But this option was not reliable, because everytime I restarted the laptop the 30Hz monitor changed to 320p resolution and I had to play with the settings to get it back at 4k. Also the image at 4k 30Hz looked blurry. I even tried disconnecting the laptop screen but that didn't change anything.

I tried multiple configurations with DisplayPort and HDMI. And dual 1080 and 4K Monitors.

Sadly my ultimate goal of External Dual 4K monitors @ 60Hz is not possible even if you turn off the laptop screen.

If image at 1080p is accetable, you can connect two external at 1080p 60Hz. But we all know the scaling nighmare when you have one monitor at 4k and other at 1080p. So if I were to do that I would change even the laptop monitor to 1080p or just disconnect it.

Well, hope my back and forth expirience help us understand the Yoga 720 TB3 limitations.

Note: Shame on you Lenovo for going cheap on the TB3 connection. Dell XPS 15 can use dual montiros at 4k60Hz via their TB3.

Ah bummer, I kind of figured it couldn't do dual external 4K @ 60Hz since it's only got the 2 lanes over TB3.

For me, it's still working flawlessly to do dual external QHD (2560x1440) @ 60Hz. So at least it can do better than 1080p. QHD has nearly twice the pixels of 1080p, after all.

now i feel like an idiot buying this based on Best Buy rep telling me that a $80 docking station would work and i later found out that graphics card on the Yoga 720 is inferior. I knew I needed another port. So is there a docking station < $200 I can get 2 monitors to go at 1080p?

Sadly almost all docks you can find at a good price use DisplayLink which is like a virtual video card thru the USB and does not use the Intregated Video Card or the NVidia GeForce GPU of the Lenovo. So for me is not really a solution.

The only one that I personally tested to run dual 1080p straig from the video cards was the Levono Thunderbolt 3 Dock. But the price is over $200. (I'm guessing that any other Thunderbolt 3 dock would do the same, but actually the Lenovo is in the same price range than all the other brands).

The only advise I can give you is to buy it from this store which was the lowest price I found:

http://www.provantage.com/lenovo-40ac0135us~7LEN9M16.htm

We arelady bought two from them in the office and they had very quick shipping. ($211.18 at the time of writing this post).

Note: I have no relationship with Provantage.com. I didn't even know that store existed until I found it in Google looking for the best price for the Lenovo (Part# 40AC0135US). It comes with one power supply, one small TB3 cable and the dock.

Again, in case anybody from Lenovo reads this forum and/or care, I'm really dissapointed with Lenovo not providing enough banthwith on their TB3 port for the Lenovo 720 to run Dual 4k Monitors. Because of that Lenovo lost the sale of Yogas 720 for all the engineers in our organization. We will have to stay with the Dell XPS 15, which can do dual 4K Monitors.

There are lots of sub-$100 "docks" that can do dual 1080p. Plugable brand is good and has a really popular one for $95.

I also on research because I want to buy Ideapad 720S and got Thunderbolt 3 with it.

And not sure Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock support or not with this laptop.

Since it only supported ThinkPad series. I want to setup 2 or 3 monitors.

Thanks for the info since I know it may support with Thinkpad USB-C dock.
