Re: Yoga 720 dock compatibility

2017-12-19, 20:39 PM

I bought that exact docking station (Thinkpad USB-C Dock), despite the naming concern; it works with my Yoga 720.

I can't guide you to such set up instruction; I did update the firmware/driver on my 720.

I was most interested in getting my two external monitors (both smartTVs connecting via HDMI) to work with my new 720; the keys I learned the hard way:

1) Must use the USB cable that came with docking station and plug into USB port on right side of laptop (connects to back of docking station), and

2) Must buy an HDMI to DP adapter with 'active mode' (the usual, common such adapters are worthless) so that I could take advantage of the DP port in the docking station.  Sometimes that fails (for reasons unknown), so I have to plug my 2nd HDMI into an adapter that plugs into the front most (thunderbolt?) port on the left side of my laptop.

To be clear, the USB port(s) on the docking station recognizes my universal USB receiver for my wireless keyboard as well as my flash drive.  Hope this all helps.

Re: Yoga 720 dock compatibility

Hi, I tried the 720 15 IKB at Lenovo USB C Dock with its own Screen activated and two external WQHD Screens as extensions. Initial result was one of the two screens working only in 1080p, the other in WQHD. Intel offers the possibility to set custom resolutions in the driver for the intel HD 630 Graphics and I managed to get both external Screens running in WQHD using an reduced refresh rate of 40 Hz and the CVT-RB mode. Did anyone try the Lenovo thunderbolt 3 Dock with 2 WQHD screens?

Re: Yoga 720 dock compatibility

2018-01-19, 16:49 PM

I purchased a Yoga 720 15" after a support technician at Lenovo Ideapad tech support for the Yoga 720 told me that it supports the Lenovo Thinkpad USB-C dock type 40A9, which I already have. It worked great with two 1920x1080 external Displayport displays in addition to the laptop's built-in display initially, but in the middle of the operating system update the laptop did during the initial setup, all three displays went dark. After fiddling around with the equipment a while, trying different things, I discovered that the dock now works with one external Displayport display attached to it, but not two. All drivers and the operating system are updated to the latest, but this is the current status.

I worked with Lenovo Ideapad tech support for the Yoga 720, and the technician told me that what happened is that the update caused my USB-C dock driver to be updated to a new version that is causing problems, and I needed to work with the Thinkpad tech support team to get the correct driver for the USB-C dock. In essence, he said I need to downgrade my USB-C driver to the original version, since it was working. So, I was transfered to a Thinkpad support technician.

The Thinkpad support technician told me she didn't know why the Ideapad support technician for the Yoga 720 transfered me to Thinkpad support, because she said that the Thinkpad USB-C dock is only for Thinkpad branded computers and does not support any Ideapad machines, including the Yoga 720. She refused to help troubleshoot and correct my problem with using the Lenovo Thinkpad USB-C dock with the Lenovo Yoga 720 computer. She referred me to a Lenovo Ideapad sales rep to advise me on what USB-C dock is supported for use with the Yoga 720 15" computer that I purchased.

I talked to a Lenovo Ideapad sales representative and asked him what USB-C dock would work with my Yoga 720 to support two external 1920x1080 Displayport displays in addition to the built-in display of the Yoga 720. He told me the Lenovo Thinkpad USB-C dock (40A90090US) is the recommended USB-C dock for this machine. He admitted that there was nothing in writing that I could see showing that it is supported for use with this machine, but told me that the sales team has been told that this is the dock to recommend, or the Lenovo Thinkpad Thunderbolt dock for more functionality. He said that he sells this dock for the Yoga 720 all the time and they don't get any returns.

So, I am left with a quandary. Either:

1) The Thinkpad tech support person is wrong

2) The Ideapad sales rep is wrong

3) The Ideapad tech support person is wrong

4) The USB-C 40A90090US dock is different than the USB-C 40A9 dock, so that the new dock will work even though the old one now doesn't after the driver update

I am not sure whether I should buy the new Thinkpad USB-C dock, which Thinkpad tech support may also refuse to support, whether I should return my Yoga 720 and get a computer system that is fully supported by the manufacturer, or whether I should buy a third-party USB-C dock. But, I am not sure what USB-C dock would actually work with the Yoga 720 to provide gigabit ethernet and two external Displayport 1920x1080 displays in addition to the built-in laptop display.

Anyone have a solution for this scenario?

I am having problems using the ThinkPad USB-C Dock with the Yoga 720 15", also, which I go into more detail on below in another response in this thread. I'd love to know how you resolved the issue, if you have, or what you ended up doing.

When you say WQHD, is that 2560x1440? Either way, I recommend you get the thunderbolt dock instead of the usb-c one. Pretty sure it's a 4x throughput difference (5gbps vs. 20gbps). Mine's been working well with dual QHD@60Hz and laptop display UHD@60Hz.

I agree, I am now using the Thunderbolt-Dock and it mostly works fine. Sometimes after plugging in the thunderbolt cable it does not show the ethernet adapter and therefore my Yoga 720 15IKB cannot connect to the network. Disconnecting the dock from the power supply and reconnecting after a few seconds helps. For such an expensive dock this is annoying. But I am glad to able to run my two WQHD (2560x1440) screens@60Hz without issues and i did not find a more afordable solution.

It is the "Lenovo 40AC0135EU Thunderbolt 3 Dockingstation", ordered via amazon:

Re: Yoga 720 dock compatibility

2018-01-23, 15:32 PM

Here is my solution to my problems using the Lenovo Thinkpad USB-C dock (Type 40A9) to drive two external 1920x1080 Displayport displays on the Yoga 720 15". It is now working great, so I have a three-display system including the Yoga's screen. The USB-C dock also connects to the network via gigabit Ethernet reliably as well as connects an external hard drive via USB 3.0 and my wireless mouse and keyboard.

The problem was that one of the drivers that Windows installed during the initial setup update was causing problems. In particular, the Intel(R) HD Graphics 630 driver needed to be rolled back to version 21.20.16.4627 dated 3/9/17.

It is a shame that neither Lenovo Ideapad support nor Lenovo ThinkPad support would fix this problem for me. Thanks go to Geek Squad for quickly identifying the driver that needed to be rolled back and the version it needed to be rolled back to.
