so i dont need thunderbolt capability, right?  I ordered the Lenovo Thinkpad USB 3.0 Ultra Dock-US 40A80045US (Super Speed USB 3.0, USB 2.0, HDMI, Display Port)  for $138 on Amazon over weekend.  It arrives tomorrow.

Nope you don't NEED Tb3 compatibility, it's just optimal. One thing I don't know about yet is how Display Port alt-mode works over USB. I believe that Lenovo dock you bought uses alt mode so there is no active DisplayLink-like video processor, which is a good thing. You should have no lag and no real COY load...I think.

guess i will find out. i had a docking station I purchased from Best Buy for $79 with ALT mode and it did not work with the Yoga 720 because the 720 graphic card didn't have the Alt Mode. Guess this docking station addresses that. should arrive by noon today.

The 720 most definitely has alt mode. The 40A80045US is a displaylink dock.

Re: Yoga 720 dock compatibility

2017-10-07, 22:12 PM

If anyone is browsing this thread like I did last week and wondering what to do, I would like to say that the Lenovo Thinkpad Thunderbolt Docking Station is working for me on my Lenovo Yoga 15" with two external 24" 1080 displays and with my laptop screen turned on (so three monitors total). It's been working well for a few days now (bought the monitors and the dock last week).

I use a HDMI cable for one monitor and VGA for the other one. It wasn't much work to set it up (the drivers were installed autmatically once I plugged the dock to my laptop), but it took me a while to decide which docking station and monitors to purchase (this thread helped me a lot).

I wanted to get two 4k monitors, but I wasn't sure if it was going to work, especially since I've got the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 2GB graphics card which isn't super powerful.

The docking station gets fairly (but not extremely) warm, while my laptop usually stays cool. The laptop gets super warm though as soon as I start to play any games (such as GTA V), but I don't care since I got this set-up mainly for work productivity and not for gaming. But I've got a cooling pad, just in case, which I plug in to a USB port on the docking pad.

One thing that amazed me throughout this process was how difficult it was to find info on what setups would work. The Lenovo live chat was not very helpful and the experts at a large electronics shop told me that it would not be possible for me to have a dual monitor set up on this laptop without using both of my USB ports, which is manifestly false.

Hello,
thank you for all your input and I now bought the Yoga 720 and the Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 dock.
I just have the problem, that I cannot charge the Yoga via the Thunderbolt 3 connection - do you have the same issue?

I now need both energy adapter (one for the Yoga, one for the docking station) plus the Thunderbolt connection between both.
Thank you for your help

The Yoga 720 15" can't charge via USB, unfortunately.

Lol @ my autocorrect earlier when it changed CPU to COY.

Thank you Snake2332 for your fast reply, but what about the Thunderbolt connection? Or are you referring to Thunderbolt 3 = USB 3.1 = No charging because USB

The 15 inch does not support charging over any of the USB C connectors including the thunderbolt one. Only the 13 inch supports it.

Hey snake, have you managed to connect two monitors to the thunderbolt port by daisy chainig the monitors?

I mean without the usage of the dock...

Much thanks :)
