Yoga 730 15 - short battery life

Hey guys!

So I´m still trying to maximize the battery life of my 730. My workload on battery is taking notes with OneNote (OneNote is set to maximize battery life), the system is syncing with OneDrive, maybe the file explorer is open. Thats it.

What I´ve done so far:

- undervolted the i5-8250U -100mV

- did several tweaks inside throttlestop and energy management so the CPU consumes usually 2-3W

- I went inside device manager and disabled the GTX 1050

- UHD 620 uses maximize battery life settings

- disabled most of the background services and graphical effects in Windows

- using brightness levels in the lower half of the spectrum

still I´m only reaching ~ 4-5h from a 46Wh Charge, which is avg power draw of ~ 10W

I had one day where the battery life was consistantly great, expected runtime above 8 hours, but the next day everything went back to normal.

Even if I leave the system idling for while. CPU dropping to 2.0W, RAM 0.3W, min display brightness, I cant exceed ~5h.

Can someone explain me how the power draw adds up to ~10W if the CPU is only at 2W, RAM at 0,3W, SSD maybe 1W

Whats left is wifi card (which is also set to be max energy efficient) the Display... am I forgetting something?

I´m looking foward to any ideas

Re: Yoga 730 15 - short battery life

Hi Centurio_Macro,

Greetings.

Similar to this discussion, Cloud storage do takes toll on the battery as it constantly perform synchonization and updates.

This would be the same reason others prefer to disable it or at least apply battery saver mode or notification alert like here to be aware of the activity and the battery consumption.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Hey spidey101,

Thx for your advice. I tried it but unfortunatly even with OneDrive deactivated idle power draw didnt went under 9W. Disabling Wifi saw no further improvements.

Re: Yoga 730 15 - short battery life

Hi Centurio_Macro,

Greetings.

Checking on similar reported battery performance from other post here and here would similarly perform same 3-5 hours on battery.

Other have considered disabling fast start up and likewise limiting graphics in the BIOS choosing Integrated graphics only that extended battery life.

As the model utilizes a lot of performance resources that takes much battery power to deliver its performance, it compensates it with its Fast charging features that allows users additional 2 hours for a 15 minute charge.

Regards

Re: Yoga 730 15 - short battery life

If I´m on the go, the GTX 1050 is always disabled, as I stated earlier.

So Lenovo advertise this device with up to 11 hours of battery life, how did they achieve this?

I would say I optimized every bit of my device and I am running out of ideas. But I am not at 7, 8 or 9 hours,

All that I can achieve is 5 hours, when the laptop is idling, doing nothing.

Update: I tried one last thing:

I went in device manager and disabled the touch functionality of the screen. Now im at 9-10 hours, yay.

Interestingly the CPU power consumption went down likewise. The min power draw changed from 2W to 1.3W.

If Im able to do all tasks with the pen only, I should be fine.

Edit: regarding fast charding: my battery weared 11.9% during the first 6-9 months of using. I blame myself for that because I played games while plugged to the wall with battery at 100% and I used fast charging. In both cases the battery got quite warm, well above 30°C which Lithium Ion battery doesnt like.

Re: Yoga 730 15 - short battery life

I made a wrong statement.

In order to improve battery life  I disabled the touch screen. Additionally I tried the BIOS setting UMA graphics only, which I wasnt sure I actually did.

After some weeks of daily use I can now say that this BIOS change had an profound impact on my battery life. The touch screen improved it only by a small margin.

What that also means, is that disabling the GPU via the device manager is something completely different than going into the bios and switching it off.

My system power consumption is now only 4-5W compared to 9-10W in the past.

An interesting side effect was that after the "BIOS switch off" the idle power consumption of my i5 dropped from 2W to 1,3W- 1,2W and the temps from 37-42° to 30-36°C.

Hi Centurio_Macro,

Greetings.

Good to know that limiting graphics in the BIOS choosing Integrated graphics only as replied previously helped you extend battery life and lowered heat temp.
