Yoga 900 died, need SSD external enclosure, what kind and how to run it?

2017-01-12, 5:08 AM

Hi everybody. Help me out here. Please.

My Yoga 900 died (the Black Screen of Death) and I am looking for an external enclosure for the SSD.

It's an M.2 SATA drive, with what appears to be a B+M key. The machine build is the 131SK, 80MK002NUS.

I bought the ZTC Thunder enclosure here, but cannot get it to work.

https://www.amazon.com/ZTC-Enclosure-Adapter-SuperSpeed-ZTC-EN004-BK/dp/B00KQ4LNJC

Plugged in the USB SSD enclosure and the new computer at first did not recognize the SSD drive at all.

It then finally read the drive in Disk Management but the data is listed as RAW rather than NTSF.

Did I buy the wrong thing, or do I need Samsung Magician or Migration?

What do I do? Step by step, inch by inch...help me arrive at a solution.

Thanks.

I use one of these and it simply worked.  Could your drive be upside down?  encrypted?

With the key configuration (B or B+M), you cannot insert the drive upside down.

But I gave it a shot anyway.

Any other ideas?

I've never had this problem with a hard drive enclosure before.

Any brand recommendations on Newegg or Amazon or???

I have read some reviews of this enclosure that said it was worthless.

I have a number of Sabrent enclosures. All work very well. Which reminds me, I have an old Dell notebook that recently fried. I had JUST put a Samsung SSD in it a few months back. Need to dig that out and repurpose it.

You can also skip the enclosure idea and just use a USB 3 to SATA adapter cable: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-SATA-Drive-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00HJZJI84/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1484229837&sr=1-1&keywords=ssd+drive+transfer+cable

I'm totally fine using a cable and not an enclosure if there's one that works for the Yoga 900 13ISK

SSD, which is an M.2 SATA with a B+M key. Know of one?

Sorry. I was thinking the usual SSDs, not the M.2 ones. I found this beauty on Amazon that should do the trick: https://www.amazon.com/ZTC-Enclosure-Adapter-SuperSpeed-ZTC-EN004-BK/dp/B00KQ4LNJC There are others, but making sure they do the B+M keying is the ..well, "key."

That's the enclosure I wrote about in my original post that didn't work. A dud.

Read the reviews on Newegg -- most of them say the device doesn't work.

Thanks for trying. Any other ideas?

No problem. But if you do know of other options as a solution, that would be great.

I'd probably have to Google around, same as you, I guess. It's never been something I had to contend with. I have already imaged the 910's drive and will probably clone it just for safety's sake. But I guess I'd need an adapter to restore it all should it go south.
