Yoga 900 won't recognize mini display port

I have an odd issue with my mini port that connects to monitors and big screen TVs: It won't work.

Sometimes it works fine. I turn on the monitor or TV and connect the mini port adaptor (I have one for HDMI and one for Display Port) and the screen appears on the monitor or TV.

Other times it simply DOES NOT WORK. Then, several days later, I boot up and connect to the port and it works as if nothing was ever wrong. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why this happens.

When it does not work, I have tried everything and it refuses to recongize and identify the external display, which does not show in Display Properties.

I have rebooted. I have tried connecting to the port in every order there is, before I turn on the Y 900, after. I have tried turning on the monitor before and after, or connecting the adatptor the monitor before and after booting up, etc. NOTHING WORKS.

And it happens with all monitors and various cables and adaptors.

There are times when I need it to be able to see my work (video editing, audio editing, Photoshop) because the native screen on the Y 900 is just too small.

Why does this happen?  How can I get it work when I need it to work but it isn't working?

Thank you.

Re: Yoga 900 won't recognize mini display port

Hi tspnyc!

Welcome to the Community,

Could you tell us more about what type of connection you currently have? Do you have two separate cables for your TV / Monitor that is connected to your laptop? If you could also share a picture of the connection setup, that'll be helpful.

Regards,

Re: Yoga 900 won't recognize mini display port

Hi and thanks for your query.

In reply to your query...

I am using a Cable Matters HDMI to Mini Displayport adaptor, with an Insignia HDMI cable, as well as other HDMI cables.

I am using a V7 DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort adaptor with a StarTech heavy duty DisplayPort cables.

All of these items work flawlessly with other non-Lenovo laptops, multiple monitors and TVs.

When my Yoga 900 is booted up, plugging the adaptors into the Mini DisplayPort slot results in the "blip blip-blip" connection sound. And unplugging the adaptors results in the disconnection sound.

BUT the Display Settings for the Yoga 900 do not change. The external display is not detected.

At the time I posted my original issue, the external display(s) would sometimes work, and sometimes not. And there seemed to be no rhyme or reason as to why there was detection but not at other times.

It was almost every other time that it worked.

Since leaving my post, however, it has never worked.

The Lenovo 900 no longer recognizes the Mini-DisplayPort, regardless of what is plugged into it, although it continues to make the port connection and disconnection sounds.

There is no listing for the Mini-DisplayPort port in Device Manger, and there never has been, which is mentioned by other users.

I also see on the internet, MANY people posting on various tech forums about this or similar problems with the Mini-DisplayPort port not working on various Lenovo devices, going back several years.

PS - the Connect to Wireless Display is recognized - but the lag is so terrible it makes it completly unusuable for the kind of work I do, which is video and multitrack audio editing. It is even impossible to use with Sling TV, etc.

I have seen a video now on Youtube with instructions on how to open the Yoga and replace some hardware related to the port. I will not do this. But it is clear I am not the only person suffering from this issue.

So this is going back to Best Buy for inspection and possible return, unless someone here has a solution.

Re: Yoga 900 won't recognize mini display port

Hi! Try to update the system and the drivers using the Lenovo Vantage utility. Just search Lenovo Vantage in the Cortana search field, open the app (download of not yet installed) then look for System Updates. Keep us posted on the results.

Re: Yoga 900 won't recognize mini display port

I installed or updated the Vantage and ran that. The only thing that needed updated was the camera.

I also ran the full sytem check that is part of the ultility. It found no issues.

The port still did not work.

However, the next day I was still trying to make it work and I got it to work temporarily.

I went into Advanced Display Settings. It only showed the main display. But when I hit the back arrow, suddenly the external display was dectect and worked.

The next boot up the same thing happened. Only when I hit the back arrow in Advanced Display did it come on.

It has not come on since in several tries.

New development: For the first time ever I used the NVidea app. It sees the external display, but it does not actually connect to it. It says it is not currently available (not the exact wording.) I can choose to extrend, duplicate, etc. and it accepts those changes. I can change the resolution and it accepts those changes.

But the display never actually comes on and remains unddected by the PC's Display settings.

This all seems to suggest something is not shutting down properly (like sometimes happen with USB ports if a cable is removed without right clicking on the port via software and waiting for the Safe to Disconnect message.) Something in the Yoga 900 knows it is connected, but something is stuck and not completing the chain to share the display information with the external display.

But since Device Manager does not ever show the mini-DisplayPort there is no way to see if it is "working properly."

Re: Yoga 900 won't recognize mini display port

Hello! Let us try to clean reinstall the graphics driver. Have you already tried that? Could you please provide us the machine type model?

Re: Yoga 900 won't recognize mini display port

Please go to Control Panel > Uninstall a program > Look for intel HD driver then uninstall it. After that, go to device manager and then check display adapter if it's still showing up the driver. Restart the laptop, then install the driver using this link https://lnv.gy/2BAk85V update us with the result. Thanks.

Re: Yoga 900 won't recognize mini display port

Thanks again for the assistance. The suggested fix did not work.

The same issue exists. I was able to detect and connect to my HD monitor via my DisplayPort adaptor and cable ONCE only. When I tried to connect to a different monitor via the HDMI adaptor, the Intel Graphics utility could see the monitor, but the display did not appear on the montor, and when I saved the settings, it blinked and the external display vanished from the utility screen. Thereafer no external display could be detected with either adaptor.

The PC's Display Settings blinks when I plug in either adaptor, but never detects anything.

Prior to this, as per your instructions, I had unintalled the the only display driver listed (it did not say "HD") and used the link you provided.

That installed "Vulkan Runtime Libraries 1.0.42.0", as it appears in the Control Panel/Programs. In Device Manager the driver is called Intel IRIS Graphics 540.

For the first time I noticed a link to open Devices and Printers (via the usb connections icon in the System Tray).

In there was listed two different monitors, even though I was not connected to one. So I deleted them. They come back when I reconnect the adaptors - even though nothing is detected by the Intel Graphics utility.

Also listed is an icon with various size screens in red with a large L. The name of this device is DESKTOP BOS2 FLP. I did not delete that device in case it is something inherent to the Lenovo Yoga 900 operations.

If you think it is advisable to remove the DESKTOP BOS2 FLP device I will try that.

And the next time an external display actually works, I will try going into the systray and disconnecting the adaptor before removing the plug, and deleting the display from the Devices and Printers, to see if that might possibly allow me to detect and use an external display the next time I need to - which is basically always, since the Yoga screen is so small.

Thanks

PS

I will add it is VERY frustrating that I cannot get to "Deivces and Printers" via the Cortona search area! "Devices" "Printers" "Devices and Printers" finds nothing on PC. And I cannot find it in the Control Panel or Device Manger. That I guess is just one more very stupid "feature" of Windows 10.
