Would you have the machine number/ MTM to verify the parts else try checking the part number from the sticker or from parts look up page. Try getting the part number of the upper case as it also holds the keyboard for us to check if it has a backlit capability.
FN + ESC is for paper view that supposes to make the screen yellowish for viewing as FN + spacebar should also toggle the backlit keyboard (page 30). The spacebar should also have a flashlight icon on the left-hand side indicating backlit ability. Surprisingly, as you mentioned is not also working.
Turning on the machine using the Novo button (item 4 page 54) for BIOS setup to check hotkey / FN option if enabled.
Update us soon as convenient.

Good that paper display works, we can now say that FN feature is working.
Just needing to check the upper case if the model machine type / MTM have the backlit keyboard.
Confirming that the spacebar does have the flashlight icon,

Try to navigate back to the BIOS. Try pressing FN and spacebar together to check for the backlight.
Load defaults on the Exit tab, save and restart to check again.
If the same issue, then I would suggest that you either call the store or technical support.
