I'm trying to connect to an extended monitor with a USB 3.0 (bought from Lenovo online) itself but it can't seem to detect the monitor.
I've connected the HDMI cable on both ends.
Is there something that I'm missing?

Are you using the USB 3.0 port on the right side of the system or the new USB-C port on the left?
Which adapter are you using, i.e. Lenovo part number?
What app or utility are you using to detect the external monitor? Fn-F10-? Windows Display settings? Intel HD Graphics Control Panel?
Have you tried to reinstall the Intel display driver?

I bought the lenovo universal usb3.0 from the website itself : http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/accessories/cables-and-connectors/adapters-usb/CABLE-BO-USB3-0-to-VGA-H...
Which port should I be using (right / left?)
I've tried Windows Display settings & Intel HD Graphics Control Panel. Both can't detect the external monitor.
(I've previously used an ASUS docking station to connect and it worked).
But since I've bought this adaptor (to be used at home - with no docking station); I've searched online and followed this :http://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/544321
To no avail.
Could you guide me how to install the Intel display driver please? And which is the correct one.

I'm not familiar with this adapter. I thought you might be referring to Lenovo USB-C to HDMI Adaptor which is designed to work with the new USB-C port on the left side of the Y900s, beside the power connector.
Re the adapter you have, check Lenovo Universal USB 3.0 to VGA/HDMI Adapter to ensure that you have the latest drivers. This page also indicates that this adapter was intended for use with ThinkPad products. I don't know why it wouldn't work with IdeaPad Yoga models but they're not explicitly listed.
As for the video driver for the Y900s, see Yoga 900S-12ISK Laptop (ideapad) and search for Display and Video Graphics.
If none of these driver updates fix the problem, you might want to contact Lenovo about exchanging the adapter you have for the USB-C version. Several posters on this forum have reported that it works well with their Y900s. (I have a CableCreation USB-C to HDMI Adapter which also works well.)
