Yoga 910-131KB 80VF Shutdown Startup Issues

Dear All,

I'm using Lenovo Yoga 910-131KB 80VF notebook for about 3 years now. Recently, I'm facing 2 issues.

 

1. The notebook does not shutdown properly, if I click Windows Shutdown button, I get a message "Shutting Down Windows", the display turns off. However, the power LED light does not turn off, the CPU does not turn off. This goes on endlessly, until the battery is discharged.

I force power off the notebook by long pressing the power button. 

Anyone facing a similar issue?

 

2. For startup, when I press the power button, the LED light flashes, Lenovo logo comes on the screen and goes off. The LED light keeps flashing. After couple of trials, finally Windows starts. 

Anyone facing a similar issue?

 

I tried updating BIOS, Windows, Drivers, Antivirus etc. No luck. These issues are annoying.

 

Appreciate solution / suggestions from the community.

Welcome to the Community

 

Let's try the easy stuff, first. Next time you force-shutdown the computer, keep the power button depressed for a full minute after it shuts down.  Then see if it'll start up, normally.

Thanks for the response. Yes it does. But the problem repeats the next time I startup or shutdown.

Does it still happen in Safe Mode or with a clean boot?

Yes it does in safe mode as well. I tried running hardware diagnostics of Lenovo Vantage. No problems detected.

 

Startup and Shutdown are the only problems.

You're getting a Lenovo splash screen, so it's posting fine. I suspect something in Windows is the likely issue. I haven't had anything like this with my 910, though Windows has refused to shut down a number of times on all of my machines. Some things to look into: 

  • Disable fast boot
  • Check Device Manager (remember to click "view hidden items") for any driver warnings or conflicts.
  • Look through Event Viewer's System logs for clues.
  • Check Task Manager when it doesn't shut down to see what's still running.
  • Run a thorough virus scan.
  • Try booting from your bootable recovery disc (you DID make one of those when you first set it up, right?).

Thanks for the response. I also think the issue is with Windows. It is random, sometimes there is a smooth shutdown & startup. Some times there is no shutdown. Some other times there is no proper startup.

 

When there are Windows Updates, I have no control on the situation. Anyway:

I reached out to local Lenovo Helpdesk, they advised me to backup data and perform a one key recovery. I'm not very comfortable to do this as it is time consuming and hitting an arrow in the dark.

I'm not sure if NOT finding any viri is something I'd say "no luck" about. :D Kidding. You still might grab Malwarebytes and let it have a look.

 

At this point, you're down to either uninstalling and reinstalling some individual drivers, such as the Intel Management Engine and the ACPI Battery drivers. Backing up all your data and using the NOVO button to reset the 910 to out-of-the-box condition might be your best bet. I know people who do that quarterly, believe it or not, just to get a clean Windows install.

 

The only thing that keeps nagging at me is the power button LED flashing after the Lenovo splash screen appears. I'll have to examine my 910 more carefully. It spends most of its time on a cooling pad inside of an entertainment center. I'm on the sofa with a wireless keyboard, bluetooth mouse and 43-inch display. :)

I had an identical issue on an identical machine. Was driving me CRAZY because I could neither restart nor shutdown normally except by:

 

1. Holding down power button for 10 seconds. 

2. Using "shutdown /s" command from within "CMD" terminal. 

 

Nothing else would work and it irked me that I could never do a proper restart or shutdown. 

 

I spent a half day researching. Tried de-selecting the "fast startup" option in Windows 10 but it made no difference. 

What finally worked for me was that I had set my screen and hard drive to "never" sleep when plugged in (control panel settings under power).  When I changed these options to anything other than "never" (mine is now set to 2 hours), I was FINALLY able to both restart and shutdown normally, whether docked or undocked.

Could CMOS Battery be the issue?

It has been 3 years I replaced the battery.

The problem is annoying now.

 

Laptop doesnt startup at all.

 

LED and keyboard blink every 10 seconds

 

CPU starts fan whirls, then powers off automatically.

 

I long press for 10 secs 30 secs 1 min, same issue.

 

Tried safe mode, startup repair. Nothing helps.
