Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

I have had 3 of them. They are phenomenal laptops great screen, great trackpad etc......provided you do not work in a quiet room. If you do then you cannot use this machine without throttling the CPU.

I am a programmer and often work in a room with others. I cannot throttle the CPU and I cannot have it sound like a jet engine, so i returned the units

Did your units sound like the video posted above?  I can understand some fan noise but that video was really bad...

I don't want to scare you but 1 did and the other 2 are a lot worse than the video. I feel the video didn't capture how high pitched the sound was. It is a lot like a mosquito.

There isn't a clear winner right now in the portable laptop category. Every laptop has a downside:

Lenovo Yoga 910 - Works great for those not working in a quiet environment

HP Spectre X360 - Trackpad isn't as good as Lenovo and no 4k resolution option

Macbook Pro 2016 - Horrendous keyboard

Razer Stealth - Only 12.5 inch screen and awful coil whine

Dell XPS - Expensive and coil whine noise

There really isn't a clear winner, its about finding what you can deal with

wow, that's a bummer.  Looks like I'll roll the dice then, I agree with you the other choices aren't that great, hopefully I'll get a good batch...

I also have the special buy from best buy with the glass lid and the fan sounds like the lap top is going to take off!

Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

After two Yoga 910s, sadly I have given up. Best Buy asked if I'd like to try a 3rd. Nope. Instead, I took a 2nd mortgage and ordered a Macbook Pro.

The Yoga was growing on me, perfect in many ways -- except for that fan. (I can adapt to the right shift key.)

I didn't mind the fan spinning up randomly, as it would normally go back to sleep seconds afterwards.

I minded that when it spun up, I could hear a loud very high-pitched whine. Perhaps some people (Lenovo engineers?) can't hear high frequencies. I still can, and suspect many others can too.

One other issue: when on battery power, the CPU would slow by what appeared to be 60+%. I would start a heavy CPU job that would normally take 10 seconds when plugged in; on battery, it would take 30 seconds. Perhaps it's a configuration option. Alas, I've no patience to troubleshoot these issues.

Sad, as in many ways the Yoga 910 and Windows 10 have leaped past what Apple offers.

Perhaps the Yoga 920 will be the right one.

Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

Over the past week, the Yoga 910 was growing on me.

I didn't mind the fan spinning up randomly, as it would normally go back to sleep seconds later.

But, I minded its piercing, high-pitched whine. Perhaps some people (Lenovo engineers?) can't hear high frequencies. I still can, and suspect, by the length of this thread, that others can too.

One other issue: when on battery power, the CPU would slow by 60+%. I would start a heavy CPU job that would normally take 10 seconds if plugged in; on battery, it took 30 seconds. Perhaps it's a configuration option. Alas, I've no patience to troubleshoot these issues.

So, after two Yoga 910s, and an offer from Best Buy to try a 3rd, I gave up. I've mortgaged my house and ordered a Macbook Pro.

In many ways the Yoga 910 and Windows 10 have leaped past what Apple offers. But the anxiety building waiting for the next high-pitched squeal from within the Yoga made me give up.

Perhaps the Yoga 920 will be the right one.

Watch the video of the screeching fan:

I was so excited to purchase the Lenovo Yoga 910 Special Edition. I got number 1805 of only 4000 that were made. The computer is beautiful and would have been my second Lenovo Yoga. I also own the Yoga 2 Pro, which I have loved by the way.

I opened the box and the computer was beautiful. It has a glass back panel and 4K UHD screen. Everything looked wonderful then I turned it on. Almost immediately the fan noise started. It was like fingernails on a chalkboard. A scratchy whiny screech that was completely intolerable!

I went on Lenovo's forums and found that dozens of others were having the same problem, so I promptly returned the machine to Best Buy. I'm so disappointed.

Hi Calvinbagley,

Have checked the video, really thx for this. We can judge that it's caused by the interference between with fan blade and other material. We are working to prevent this happen.

@      and everyone, do you have the same problem as the sound in this video, pls help to give a feedback. That will be very helpful to us.

     Thank you.

Hi, I have discovered that using Chrome solve the fan issue.

The MS browser EDGE is creating processes (rundll32) that burn CPU and lead to fan activation.

Then you can kill the process through the task manager when you see that the fan is becoming crazy or you stop using the Microsoft browser: EDGE.

Lenovo guys, this is an untested product on the browsng experience, this and the SHIFT Key are product mistakes leading to product return. Please fic this fan/edge browser issue.

Same issue as in the video on mine. SE #2093 of 4000. I reset cooling to Passive and throttled cpu to 99% to reduce te problem to be bearable. Loud fan when the system gets too warm.
