Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

2016-11-04, 7:14 AM

Yes it has a high pitched noise previously if I run it at 100% (I run parallel tests for work so that happens a lot), but normal usage won't cause too loud noise. I would say pretty toleratable. Now with that tweak even full-load work of CPU won't result in the high pitched noise, so I am fine with it now.

BTW the "new" BIOS is just the same as what I got on my machine when I bought it. You can check your BIOS version by running `wmic bios get smbiosbiosversion` from cmd.

I have this problem too, expect my computer just turns on the fans randomly then turns off once in a while. Also, my fans get really REALLY loud. It's really annoying, and I hope Lenovo is paying attention to this, and while do something about it.

Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

I just bought the Yoga 910... and it's a pretty decent ultrabook.. has good battery life...

But immediately, the first thing I noticed is this FAN NOISE ISSUE. I saw there are also Yoga 910 owners who posted on Reddit and other sites with the same issue.

Lenovo: WILL YOU FIX THIS PROBLEM OR NOT?

IF you fix it.. I will keep the laptop..but if not I'm gonna have to return it to the store. So please let people know. The fan is TOO loud. Even doing small tasks like a few browser tabs open.. or a Skype call causes the fan to kick in and VERY NOISY.

Everytime I restart the computer, etc. the fan is TOO NOISY.

Hoope to read your reply soon.

I can officially confirm this is a genuine problem with this model.

I bought a 2nd one from Best Buy. Exact same issue!

It seriously is so loud when doing anything intensive

I am running the laptop for a week now, average usage > 8 hours per day. I have the same feeling in the first 3 days, was pretty annoyed by the fan. However after it settles down with all the initial windows updates as well as setting the maximum CPU to 99% (I can still use the high-performance profile if I want the little missing CPU frequency), it has been really quiet for the last 3 days. Also I switched to Edge instead of chrome. As of now, I am pretty safistied.

I agree the 99% change makes a difference. Its more manageable

This is a known issue and is all over the Internet. There is no formal solution from Lenovo although the following solutions makes a massive difference.

I have taken the extreme approach of 1. Ordering multiple units 2. Unscrewing the units to determine the root cause

I can confirm that the following problems occur:

1. The physical fans themselves make a high pitched whine when operating. The level of this noise depends on how fast they spin
2. If the processor hits 100% CPU usage the fan spins at max and sounds extremely loud
3. Many background tasks on Windows can momentarily cause 100% CPU usage

Here are 2 solutions you can easily do that helps a lot:

1. Set Maximum Processor State to 99% in Power Plan settings so the fans never hit max
2. Only use Microsoft Edge. It requires far less processing than Chrome

If you do this the laptop noise is manageable.

Lastly, you can open up the laptop and unplug both fans. The laptop actually runs surprisingly cool, so this works. As a precaution you must do the following:

1) Set Max Processor State to 80%, which will keep the computer cool
2) Install HWInfo and add the CPU temperatures to the task bar so you can monitor them. If it hits anything consistently above 70 degrees, i'd plug the fans back in as your use case is too processor intensive.

If you do the above... your laptop will be dead silent

I am returning my unit back to BestBuy. I did not pay $1600 to limit my CPU or be forced to use Edge or unplug fans. Even with CPU limiting still hear too much noise. So sad one big flaw ruined such a beautiful device.
