Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

After Bios upgrade blower whistle diminished but still often on with an annoying disturbing tinnitus tone with a measured peak around 3KHz. What to do now?

Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

Hi guys,

I have a fan whistle / whiny version of 910-131KB (i5-7200, 8 GT ram, not 4K). The latest bios with the silent mode did not fix the high pitched sound. I'd say the fan speed behaviour is now acceptable and it doesn't seem to have too much effect on the overall cpu performance according to few GeekBench CPU benchmark tests.

But the high pitched whine nullifies the better fan speed control. Whenever the fan starts, even for a low rpm spurt, the whine is noticeable. When the cpu load is higher and the fans spin at full speed the noise is ridiculous, and it's not something you expect from a high end product. The source of the sound seems to be around PrtSc - button and the whine is audible in both laptop and tablet modes.

I was going to return the device, but found this solution article below for a similar problem with the ThinkPad series. I was sceptical that such a whine could be fixed, but am willing to wait for a while if there is soon progress on the matter.

So did you try the solution or does that solution not work?

Really makes no sense to me that the sound of a spinning fan would be affected by software. Additionally, others in this thread have indicated that they have no whine at all, at any fan speed... so that would also suggest software was not involved. I doubt one machine would have system software another would not. So I just don't buy into a software (or BIOS) fix for the "noisy" aspect of these fans. That all said, I had the machine at a business meeting the last two days and the fan was never a problem, or a concern/distraction and this would be without the latest BIOS update that included the new fan mode. I'll remain very interested to see what Levono comes up with to address the fan whine.

I dont agree with the solution provided, I am still having fan issues and occasional unresponsiveness. The system goes into a spiral spin and everything hangs for like 20 secs or so. I will returning my laptop now, I hoped this fix would work but unfortunately I dont have the patience to deal with this anymore.

Ok so I do have the issue of whistling noise, a mere youtube video is enough to produce the sound. Another distinctive thing with the laptop is that it becomes unresponsive every now and then. Everything just hangs and you loose all controls for like 20secs.

I updated to the latest BIOS and yes I've enabled quiet mode, I even reset windows, uninstalled the qualcom installers then deleted the drivers and let windows reinstall them via device manager and none of it has made any difference. The fan still runs a lot even when browsing on a single tab in Chrome (task manager shows no serious CPU usage). What I did notice is that I hear a weird noise almost like clicks coming from the upper right side of the keyboard prior to the fans starting. It's almost like a precursor to the fans starting. Amy had got in touch with me privately to resolve my issue however that lead no where and I am quite dissapointed by the support recieved thus far.

I didn't try the solution for Yoga 910 was not listed in the affected systems and my OS is windows 10 home edition. Also I couldn't find any Intel Access software or similar installed in the default configuration. A friend of mine has the same laptop bought couple of weeks earlier and it doesn't have any problems whatsoever.

I will try the BIOS fix later today, but I'm also one of those with the occasional hangs, quite frustrating

You should probably start a thread on the hangs or see if another one is going.  When you do, post what you see in your Event Viewer.

Tap the Windows key and type "manage." Computer Management will come up. Click that.

Under System Tools, expand the Event Viewer and click on System.  In the upper window, scroll and look for errors that occured the last time you experienced a hang.
