Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

2017-02-01, 18:30 PM

Quiet Mode still didn't allow me to turn my Maximum Processor Rate back to 100%. Getting closer to the machine I always wanted and expected from Lenovo. Ultra portable and quiet under normal browsing, Powerpoint/Word/Excel use. I dont' use Chrome much anymore because something makes the fan race on many pages. Edge has come a long way in usability, so I have started using it as my primary browser.

First few days my fan was running all the time. After Windows updates and my cloud files downloaded it got a little better. From this forum I learned to set the Maximum Processor Rate to 99% and to set cooling to "Passive" by going to the battery icon on the bottom row:

     --> Power and Sleep Settings

     --> Additional Power Settings

     --> Change Plan Settings

     --> Change Advanced Power Settings

     --> Processor Power Management

          --> Maximum Processor Rate

                    --> 99% on battery and plugged in

          --> System Cooling Policy

                    --> Select Passive

Lenovo - For me to recommend my Glass Topped i7/16GB Ram/512GB SSD/4K Display machine to a friend, you'll need to get me back to 100% Processor Rate and still be quiet. You have everything else I wanted in terms of specs, quality and price. (Half-sized Right Shift was a small learning curve)

Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

I got my Yoga 910 today. 4k screen, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, glass version. At the beginning there was the high pitched whistling sound and fan running all the time. After updating the BIOS to the newest version and uninstalling the Qualcomm driver installer the fan does not run so agressiveley anyomore, but the high pitched noise is still a problem when the fan does run during demanding tasks. The quiet mode has made it bearable, but when switching back to balanced mode, it returns.  So the quiet mode helps greatly but is not a permanent solution since it only makes the whistle quieter. I will try to exchange the laptop since the high pitch noise bothers me pretty much. It's a  shame, I liked the laptop  otherwise, but next 4 years with the whistle sound..., no way.

I have tried all of your solutions that you have suggested and I still have been getting the whining noise. It is very frustrating. It is not as if I am doing anything that requires strong computer usage on my computer. The noise starts over simple things of just surfing the web. A computer that I have spent this much money on should not be performing like this.

Tried the 1TB version, exact same issues. I think everyone claiming no issue might have a higher tolerance to sound. Time to go return another bad unit.

It's definitely not a higher tolerance for sound.  Mine is virtually silent. It was loud when I got it before I removed the wifi installer and updated the bios.

I dunno. I don't have much of a tolerance for strange sounds. My fan has to ramp all the way up before there's anything that could be called a "whine." Certainly nothing that could be considered distracting in a conference room. The hum from the flourscent lights is louder. I doubt a person sitting next to me could hear it even ramped all the way up. It's certainly quieter than the Dell it replaced. I may be lucky in that regard. Then, again, people who are thrilled rarely post in threads such as this. I think there may be a batch of fans that are noisier than others and we're seeing those owners, here.

I fully agree. There must be a bad batch or a batch with different fans.  Even if my fan was cranked up I can't imagine it making the whining noise that others are describing, which would make me think that something may be rubbing.

Unfortunately, that's what I am trying to figure out in terms of the bad batch, however, Lenovo support (privately for my warranty) has been horrendous! Amy tried to help but the guy who is my case manager has done absolutely nothing and now I don't even get a response from Amy. Wonder how many returns would make heads turn at Lenovo.

I have downloaded the new BIOS update.  Can someone please walk me through how to go about enabling quiet mode?  Thanks to anyone who can assist

This is my preferred method,

Shut down your laptop, then using a small pin push the tiny button on the left side of your laptop next to where the power button is (Novo button) it looks like a reset button it's recessed into the chassis.

Once you do that you'll get a few options use the up down keyboard buttons to select BIOS, once there use the Left Right Up Down buttons to navigate and Enter button to make a selection. Scroll right to configuration then scroll down to System Performance Mode and hit enter then scroll to quiet mode n hit enter again. Once you are done that scroll right to exit and exit saving change and hit enter.

You are done, hopefully it works better for you than it has for me! Good luck.
