Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

2017-02-18, 4:20 AM

I just bought a 910 (4k 512GB model). Upgrading from a Yoga 2 Pro.

Installed the new BIOS, set it to quiet mode, unistalled Atheros drivers, throttled CPU to 80% and my machine is still making a high pitched fan noise, continous operation, even when sitting there with no apps visibly open. **bleep** Lenovo?

Is there really no solutions for this? On the Yoga 2 Pro the fan only came on for a few min every hour. This is set to continous operation, even when doing nothing. Why?

I still have a 15 day return window, and if I cant find any solutions until then, Lenovo has lost a customer.

No, you don't uninstall the Qualcomm DRIVERS. You uninstall the Qualcomm WLAN driver INSTALLER. That's what's hanging. Scroll back and re-read the thread for the whole procedure.

This is not solved the problem, fan noise is still there, just low.

This update just made fan spin slower and when I open browser or word or power point, fan kicks in high gear.

Now it's quite during not doing anything on computer, but noise is back when doing anything.

Please fix the issue.  replace all the laptops with this issue.

This change seems awesome! I have, however, bought a yoga 900 which doesn't have this option. Is there going to be rolled out a silent mode bios option for the 900 as well?

I've done everything I could for the past 2 months on this new 910 1TB and all the updates, etc. but it's still annoying enough to be a rock in my shoe. After the horror stories about customer service I'm not eager to contact them for further help. How about we all just remove the back panel and yank the fan out physically. I'm sure that would solve the problem. Can someone try that and then get back to me? Yes, thats a joke. Or is it?

Since updating the Intel HD Graphics 620 drivers to 21.20.16.4550 (updated by manually searching for updates through device manager) the stuttering while watching videos through Chrome seems far better.

Also try disabling Link State Power Management (Power Options -> Change Plan Settings -> Advanced -> PCI Express/Link State Power Managment -> Set both options to Off) if you haven't done so already. Doing so decreased the amount than fan has to spin up (at least for me).

Will give this a shot, any idea what impact this has or the reason why the fans don't spin as much? Thanks.

In my case I had an error being reported constantly in Event Viewer relating to Link State Power Management. Disabling this function stopped the error.

Update on the high pitched whine situation. I sent mine for repairs after I was not able to return it to the store. The laptop was sent from here Finland to Germany for repairs and the trip took 3 weeks.

Repair report:

Defect:

- one or more USB ports malfunction (continuous), abnormal fan sound (continuous), known defect (continuous)

Diagnose:

- device is defective (USB - port), device is defective (fan / cooling), device is defective (motherboard)

After that 3 times "components replaced". The high pitched whine is gone and I guess the fan noise is now the same as in a "regular" 910. It's loud, but at least it is tolerable without the whine.

I think you can now change the "investigating" status to "known defect" on the high pitched whine problem?
