Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

2017-03-25, 17:32 PM

Has anyone tried the new drivers? I updated them all and it seems to use the fans more than before (problably because of the Intel thermal platform thingy). They are not loud, just constant on a low speed. Before they were switching between no spin (mostly) and low spin (I have bios 35 with quiet mode enabled)

PS: I recommend everyone who has a problem with the hight pitched sound to exchange their laptops until you get a non whistling one, my first one was very annoying but luckily got one without the high pitch no matter how fast the fans spin. (they still spin a little too much when the laptop is idle)

It seems they've released a bunch of new drivers. You might want to check them out if you're still having heat/fan issues. I'm seeing good results, and I suspect it might be the updated "Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework" driver.

Thanks Virtorio for for posting this! has anyone else tried the new drivers and can post comments?

Can anyone upload or provide a link for the previous thermal drivers? The new ones keep the fan spinning constantly on a low speed and I liked the previous versions behaviour more, but Lenovo website now only has the new ones.

The new BIOS driver seems to be doing a great job with my fan! In "Normal" mode it quiets down when it should.

I installed the new BIOS v36 - the quiet mode is more quiet than before. And I am not sure, but I think the balanced mode as well, but it is still too agressive, so I'll stick with the quiet mode. I also ran quick benchmark tests (NovaBench) and the results were the same on both modes

I just saw your post and checked the Lenovo support site. Downloaded and installed Bios 36. So far, it seems to be the same with 35 in my observations. They did state they did something with the the thermals in the Readme.

Will observe this Bios for the next few days.

I updated all the new drivers released by Lenovo (Intel graphics, thermal, rapid storage, io, 2 x audio (intel and realtek), bluetooth and camera) and the new BIOS 36.

It was the same at first, by I realized I lost some settings with the update (e.g. they changed my Fn keys to the default shortcuts again, instead of function keys).

I entered the BIOS setup and had to put in "silent mode" again.

Up to now, it seems impressively quiet, the fan didn't turn on even opening ms edge and google chrome (with many tabs as usual).

Am I the only one experiencing improvements?

Mine is very quiet now. Opening facebook / twitter in chrome won't trigger anything, or even if it does it shuts down very soon. I am satisfied. Good job lenovo!

Finally you solved it on Bios 36W... but for "quiet" mode only.

It'll allow constant CPU 100% use @ ~3.0 Ghz, at about 75ºc temperature and without too much noise.

However it defaults to balanced, and that is flawed, this is new. It allow CPU to work at 3,5 Ghz until thermal throthlling enters, and that is just silly.

Oh well, I'm on quiet, and now it works just fine for me.

I am actually in "balance"

as the "quiet mode" seems to cause quite a bit coil whine now. That didn't happen before this BIOS update
