Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

2017-03-31, 8:37 AM

Do a CPU stress test with CPU-Z and see CPU usage in task manager.

Mine was throttling hard in balanced, and it only did that in quiethigh performance before.

However, in quiet mode, I'm actually quite happy, as it behaves as I would want it to - quiet with some fan activity when necessary, it can sustain 100% CPU activity around 3 Ghz without getting too hot and without making noise, and from idle it can go to 3.5 Ghz for like 10 seconds if necessary.

Can´t really ask for more. The other modes (balanced and high performance) are flawed, however. You gain nothing running CPU @ 3.5 Ghz until it throttles down to like 300 mhz because it reaches around 100ºc...

Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

I've installed 36W but now that's raised the lowest level fan speed - and it's still whiney irritating noise. But to make matters worse I just ran a ray trace in Blender which consumes the CPU 100% and the throttling is much worse. The screenshot below shows how Blender is consuming 100% CPU but the clock frequency now hovers around 2Ghz maintaining about 70C!!

I expect that the i7 7500U  chip, given it's designed with a base frequency of 2.7ghz, should be able to maintain 2.7ghz indefinitely within temperature constraints. But under sustained load I'm now getting 2ghz. Ok, so the BIOS is set to Quiet mode but the fans are already noisy so anything other than that will make it unbearable.

Amy... or anyone at Lenovo, please tell me what's wrong. My Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro was _silent_ but the 910 whines away whilst doing _nothing_. Have I got defective fans? And more importantly I paid lots of money for a fast machine and yet it's crippled to under 2Ghz. I want to love this machine but it just upsets me :(

Are you sure you are in quiet mode? After flashing 36w, I had to set it again on BIOS, as it defaulted to balanced.

I also loaded the preset defaults before that.

On quiet mode, mine is showing a correct behavior, as it can sustain 100% cpu load @ around 3 ghz, I think this is correct for the i7500, on a thin ultrabook with obvious heat dissipation issues.

I definitely set it to quiet mode - it's impossible not to notice the massive increase in fan noise when it's running in balanced/performance mode!

However, I'm at home now and just tried the same test with Blender that I ran at work and (without having changed anything) the maintained Ghz is definitely better (see screenshot) and certainly more what I would expect. But, the fan is noisier compared with the previous BIOS and it's still soooo whiney.

I'm still not happy, but I acknowledge Lenovo have managed to improve the situation. I'm also still left thinking that there's something fundamentally wrong and the reason for this is where I compare it with the Yoga 2 Pro that was _silent_.

So far so good, but after the last two windows updates (or something I've installed, not sure yet...) I started to experience fan in high noise again from time-to-time.

I opened task manager to check and there was a guy there called "Runtime Broker" eating my CPU and memory:

CUP usage is usually lower than that (right now around 2-25%) and memory keeps increasing, reaching >7GB, until it starts droping again.

I found this post about this process but it seems a little old to me.

If you Bing (not Google) Runtime Broker Microsoft will tell you this.

Before I try anything, is anybody having noise issues with this process?

Hi,

check out the tip inside this article about the Runtime Broker service.

Thanks Amy_Lenovo,

Well done!

- WLAN update = major improvement
- BIOS "quite mode" = slight added improvement

I am still hearing the fan when CPU is pushed above 60%, but now at a significantly lower noise level.

Received the 910 today - happy!!

Fan spins up and down with a whine all the time.

Updated firmware

Set to Quiet mode in Bios

Removed WLAN driver

Fan still spins up and down.

Tried to download Notebook Fan Control - nothing has helped.

It has to be returned as I am used to a very silent Yoga 2 :-(
