Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

I'm contemplating purchasing this laptop. I see complaints about the excessive fan noise on costumer reviews on the web. I also see Lenovo personnel commenting in these reviews suggesting a BIOS change to quiet mode. My question is does Lenovo now make quiet mode a BIOS default on new shipments and if not, why? Is there a trade-off in lack of cooling when this BIOS quiet mode change is made? Is there danger of over heating in quiet mode? Must one live with this loud fan noise? Thank you.

Hi all! I just got a new notification for a driver update named Liteon WLAN driver. I just wonder whether this is the same driver as Qualcomm Atheros Wireless Driver which we should avoid? I installed the update a few days ago but I did unistall the update since I heard unusual fan noise right after I installed the update.

When I checked my Lenovo Companion, this update is categorized as a critical update. What should I do? Is it safe to install it?

Yes, that's the most current driver. Note that it's not the Qualcomm Atheros Wireless Driver you need to avoid. It's the Qualcomm Atheros WLAN Driver INSTALLER program. That's the thing that hangs, eating up 30% of your system resources and causing the fan to run full blast. If you have the Qualcomm WLAN installer in your list of programs, remove it.

Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

I might be wrong, but since I couldn't update the driver to the latest version 12.0.0.325, I decided to give the installer another try.

Asking Windows to automatically locate a new driver didn't find any newer version although my previous version was 12.0.0.307.

So, I installed the LeNovo update you mentioned on my machine and it seems to me that it's working fine now. I didn't notice any fan activity greater than the usual (which is not perfect of course, still annoying depending on how many browsers and browser windows you have...).

But the thing is that I think they fixed the driver installer.

After all, there is already a newer LeNovo Yooga 920 on the market, it's enough time isn't it?!

Does anybody have the same impression?

The BIOS fix by Amy on page 29 - does that work for the Yoga 900?

That BIOS is just for the Yoga 910.

Lenovo has a BIOS for the Yoga 900, but I'm not sure if it's specifically for the fan speed: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/yoga-series/yoga-900-13isk/downloads/ds105231

Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

Ok, so I've had my Yoga 910 for about two months now. Obviously came with the excruciating fan noise, but after doing everything suggested on this forum, I managed to pretty much remove it completely. Everything was nice and well until last night when two security updates were installed, and judging by their descriptions, they're probably the fixes for Spectre and Meltdown, so reverting them is not really an option. However, the fan noise is back and is stronger than ever. Is anyone else experiencing this as well after those updates? And any ideas on how to fix it (again)?

Note. Quiet mode is activated, CPU is maxed at 99%, Atheros WLAN Installer is uninstalled.

BIOS file invalid, apparently :(

My machine:

System SKU: LENOVO_MT_80SD_BU_idea_FM_Lenovo YOGA 900-13ISK for BIZ

BIOS Version/Date: LENOVO 0TCN14WW, 05/09/2016

It's not possible to live with this whistling noise. Logged a call with tech support and done all tests so it's going back; unless anyone has any other suggestions!

Re: Yoga 910 crazy loud fan even when CPU at <35%

I just feel like this laptop has an inherent design flaw regarding cool. The idea of putting the exhaust and intake both in the bezel seems like a bad idea. The fact that they retained the intake/exhaust in the 920 again seems like a poor choice. At this point I want an option for max fan power at any cpu level due to how hot this thing can get underload. I paid for an I7-7500u and its crazy to think that I need to downgrade my cpu power to stay at a reasonable operating temperature. Even with a cooling pad, going in BIOS setting it in High Performance mode, updating all my drivers including the intel ones that I had to install manually, and using a cooling pad, my laptop still throttles constantly because of these temperatures when turbo boost is enabled. Its a shame, I bought this laptop due Lenovo's reputation for building well engineered computers and my experience with my ThinkPad at work, I feel like they went too much for form over function and the end product suffers.
