Yoga 910 frequent stutter/hang, especially with Chrome browsing

My Yoga 910 has developed the annoying habit of briefly but frequently spiking CPU usage of the "System" process (as shown in Task Manager) for between one and ten seconds at a time, during which the computer becomes laggy to unusable. The Chrome browser, in particular, becomes unusable/unresponsive when this happens. Scrolling in the browser seems especially likely to trigger the issue.

Using Process Explorer from Sysinternals shows that the thread for which CPU spikes is in the routine: dxgmms2.sys!VidMmInterface+0x453d0

The best I've been able to determine, this is part of DirectX 12 and concerns video memory. Best "solution" seems to be "upgrade your video driver", but I'm already running the most recent Intel HD 620 driver available from Lenovo. (21.20.16.4526).

Is anybody else seeing this?

Re: Yoga 910 frequent stutter/hang, especially with Chrome browsing

Hi there, Thewmo                   -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Reinstall Google Chrome, something may have corrupted.

Aslo, got to Menu --> Settings --> Advanced Settings --> Uncheck "Use hardware acceleration when available" and check the status back.

In addition, can you consider running another HDD and Video test on the machine using the following and observe:

HDD:

   - HDTune to verify the HDD's health.

   - Link to picture (failing HDD)

Video:

Individual Diagnostic Tool (see Lenovo Video Test)

Update us how it goes.

Re: Yoga 910 frequent stutter/hang, especially with Chrome browsing

I reinstalled Chrome with no improvement but then unchecked "use hardware acceleration" and, after rebooting to make sure all Chrome processes had really restarted, things are better. Seems like some sort of unhealthy interaction between how Chrome uses the video card to buffer scrolling (I'm speculating here) and the current Intel HD 620 graphics driver. Next time Lenovo pushes a driver update I'll re-enable and see if the problem returns. Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Yoga 910 frequent stutter/hang, especially with Chrome browsing

Well, even though PCs have gotten better recently I think it's still true that if you don't want to troubleshoot, a Mac is still the way to go...

I've been meaning to revisit this thread - disabling acceleration in Chrome did not completely solve my stutter/hang issue. It still happens on occasion, and once it starts happening it continues to happen until I reboot (regardless of how many programs I close or how much memory I free up). There are other people in the forums reporting what seems to be veary nearly the same issue, e.g.: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Lenovo-Yoga-910-keeps-freezing-lagging-whi...

In the meantime I've tried disabling memory compression, via the Powershell cmdlet "Disable-MMAgent -mc" as described here: http://superuser.com/questions/1000485/how-to-disable-windows-10-memory-compression This seems to improve performance and I think my fan is running less, but I still encountered the VidMMInterface high CPU issue I've seen in the past.

Re: Yoga 910 frequent stutter/hang, especially with Chrome browsing

My point is why paying so much when we have to disable all the features. Are we going forward or backward. Or are we participating in some test.. we as customers have paid for this machine in full. I will arrange a call back and ask to return this laptop.

Thanks @thewmo for replying. I appreciate it!

Re: Yoga 910 frequent stutter/hang, especially with Chrome browsing

Sorry for the inconvenience caused. Once you open a chrome tab go to task manager > details > look for chrome.exe > right click it > press on set affinity > tick "All processors"

All CPUs must be working.

Lenovo has released a BIOS update with a new feature called Quiet Mode to provide a quieter fan experience for customers with Yoga 910-13IKB and 13IKB Glass laptops. Please note that this is a two-step process. After updating to the BIOS v.35, it will be necessary to then go into the BIOS and enable Quiet Mode.

Quiet Mode achieves a lower overall fan volume by making minimal changes to CPU performance and system temperature.

Version 2JCN35WW

Modify thermal and DPTF setting, add Quiet Mode.

  • Enter BIOS setup, which can be done by holding down “FN+F2” keys during system start up or pressing the Nova button when the device is shut down.
  • Go to page “Configuration” and change system performance mode to “Quiet Mode”.
  • Select “Exit saving changes” or in page “Exit” or F10. System will reboot.

BIOS v.35 can be downloaded here:

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/DS119202

For customers experiencing a continuously running fan on Yoga 910-13IKB and 13IKB Glass systems, please upgrade to the latest WLAN driver, v. 12.0.0.278. It can be downloaded

here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/DS119197. If this does not change the fan behaviour, try uninstalling the Qualcomm Atheros WLAN Installer, then reinstalling the driver.

The Qualcomm Atheros WLAN Installer can be found in Settings -> Apps -> Qualcomm Atheros WLAN Installer. Select it and then right-click to open a menu. Select Remove It. Restart the system.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Yoga 910 frequent stutter/hang, especially with Chrome browsing

I'm having the same exact problem, but only in the past 1-2 months (first couple months were problem free).  Seems to have turned on in the last month or two around when I updated the BIOS.  I can't pin it down to anything already suggested in this thread.  At it's worst it might happen every 20-30 seconds.  Basically makes laptop unusable.

Here's when & what seems to happen to best of my knowledge:

  • Problem may have started after the most recent BIOS update (if i remember correctly)
  • If the computer hasn't been rebooted in more than a couple days (reboot seems to solve issue temporarily)
  • Seems worse when browsing, but happens with or without any browser open
  • Reinstalling chrome did not help
  • Can happen when basically idle except very light tasks (typing, browsing, etc) & minimal processes running in the background.
  • Windows becomes stuttery or completely unresponsive for 5-10 seconds
  • Task manager shows "system" process spikes then goes away when system becomes responsive again (but doesn't seem to peg the CPU at 100%)
  • Sometimes when I pull disconnect the charging cable it becomes responsive again, but not all the time
  • Have run virus scans, updated drivers, etc.

EDIT:  Just noticed that when I bring another window in front of the browser, the problem stops momentarily.  So maybe browsing does make it worse.  Still an issue I've never had on any other computer.  Lenovo needs to address this.
