At what limit does it start charging? Mine is at 94% plugged in and it does not. I guess this is a built in battery conservation mode. Right?

Welcome to the Community Forums.
Just like what you guessed, most modern batteries has built-in conservation chip.
As noted here on the hardware manual for the model (page 22):
" Battery charging does not start until the Power Meter shows that less than 95% of the total power remains; under this condition the battery pack can charge to 100% of its capacity. This protects the battery pack from being overcharged or
from having a shortened life."
Hope this helps answer your query.

Thanks a lot for your prompt answer! Are there any official suggestion/guidelines on the optimal use of the battery from Lenovo? i.e. when is it better to recharge, if prolonged AC use is good, when to recalibrate, etc...

Here is one of the Lenovo Guidelines and Related articles that you can review about battery usage.
You can also check guidelines of battery manufacturer as this applies to different points of views when a technician is asked about battery and charging. Other discussions on similar sites like our community forums can be a good resource to balance out which is acceptable and logical.
