Yoga 920 Sleep Issue

2018-02-05, 15:34 PM

Hi everyone,

I bought a Yoga 920 about a month ago, and in the last week or so have had an issue with the computer's sleep function. Essentially, when I put the computer to sleep (either by shutting the lid or clicking using the mouse or pressing the power button), after a few minutes, it will not wake like you would expect it to do so under regular operation. The only way to awaken the laptop is to hold the power button and do a hard reset. This has caused me to have to do a hard reset multiple times a day.

The issue appears to be similar to this: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/ll06_en/thread-id/34896

Has anyone had a similar problem? What solutions are there?

According to my experience, one of the Microsoft updates cause this problem. I'm not sure which one but if you remember, you can un-install the latest updates or you can re-install the Lenovo Power Management software. One of them should work

Has nobody experienced this issue?

One of the first things I did was reinstall Windows to see if that would change anything, and unfortunately it just made the problem very predictable and consistent - i.e. after a few moments of shutting the laptop screen, the computer becomes inoperable and has to be reset.

By reinstalling Windows though, it means that I have also wiped out the Windows 10 update history before 3 February.

I have the same issue. About a minute after entering in sleep mode, the only way to wake it is by hard reset. (Keep the power button in for 8 seconds, and then start again)

I tried updating BIOS to latest version 5NCN41WW - no change.

Any other help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Shot in the dark, but see if "hybrid sleep" is enabled. If so, turn it off.

Right click on Start and choose Power Options

Additional Power Settings > Change plan settings > Change Advanced Power Settings.

Expand "Sleep"

Expand "Allow Hybrid Sleep"

Set both plugged-in and battery settings to "off."

Funny enough, the hibernate function works. So instead of putting it in sleep mode, I use hibernate now when closing the lid, or timeout. The laptop does not freeze, and I don't have to do a hard restart to wake it up. Just a press of the power button.

It is still annoying not to have the sleep function, as wake-up from sleep is just a press of any key. However its better than a total "FREEZE -UP"

Thanks for the help.

My difficulties with this sleep issue were resolved by going to my local Lenovo Service Centre. I was able to replicate my sleep issues consistently. The motherboard was replaced for me under warranty. It must be a relatively common problem because I had the same issue with the first replacement and had to get another one.

I had this issue last year with my 720. I had to reinstall the system, and afterwards, I had to use the McAfee removal tool. Apparently, when I uninstalled it, it left some stuff behind that made it impossible for the laptop to sleep correctly. I found this by looking at the minidumps.

Also make sure update all your drivers, use the Intel Driver & Support Assistant to make sure you have the newest intel drivers.
