Yoga 920 USB-C ports

I bought a Lenovo Yoga 920 in fall of 2018.  After about a year and a half of use, the USB-C port intended for charging stopped working.  Now the other one has started to act a little...funny.  It stopped suddenly, and a few power drains only helped for a day or do.

I've updated BIOS and drivers, and it's working so far, but nothing has ever revived the first port.  Hardware scans don't show anything wrong, and it can recognize the power cord as a USB device, but does not charge through it.

Is there anything else I can do? Or am I heading for a motherboard replacement?

Hi mdeklotz,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can try checking the ac charger as directed here in the hardware manual power checkout guide (page 21).

Specially if another known good charger still won't charge it giving off the expected indicator LED then you may consider having it checked with the service center.

I would not jump in a systemboard issue since there is a power board for most yoga 920 model like shown in page 55 item 9

I hope this helps answer your query.

Update us how things go.

Regards

Re:Yoga 920 USB-C ports

The part you mention is the older style USB port on the right side of the computer.  I'm talking about the USB-C ports on the left side, which are a part of #5 on the same manual page.  Isn't this the motherboard? It seems to me that if they mechanically fail, a motherboard replacement will be required.

I know some Thinkpad models had an issue with the firmware supplied by Intel, and without getting an update, normal computer use would eventually fry the USB-C ports.  Lenovo did some motherboard replacements for these customers, and pushed through a firmware update.

I'm just wondering if I have a similar issue, since I bought this computer from a Best Buy in 2018 and it was manufactured in 2016.  I'm worried that I did not get a proper firmware update in time, and I might have mechanical damage to one or both of the ports now.

Re:Yoga 920 USB-C ports

If I can chime in..

I believe the part @Spidey was referring to handles the power and charging, even though it's on the opposite side of the computer and happens to also contain the USB-A port. If your USB-C ports perform normally for all other functions, and a visual inspection doesn't show any port damage, it'd be easier and cheaper to start with that power board before going with a full mobo replacement.

Yeah, if it's physical damage, you'll need a new mobo. The fact you were able to get it working by holding the power button for a full minute (I assume that's what you mean by "power drain") leads me to believe the issue isn't physical damage to the USB-C port.

Just my thoughts.

Re:Yoga 920 USB-C ports

Thank you both for the advice, I think I will start with trying a data transfer through the USB-C ports to make sure they are still functional, and then replace the power board.  It will be great if a low-cost fix is all I need!

Re:Yoga 920 USB-C ports

Brief update, I ordered a new external hard drive to do a proper backup before replacing any parts, and in the meantime the second USB-C port has stopped charging  No updates or power drains have revived it, and the battery is dying fast.  I really didn't expect the port to totally fail that fast.

You know, I've used this computer for less than 2 years, and I'm not that hard on computers.  If I could go back in time, I'd do the extended warranty.  But then, I've never had a sudden failing-at-two-years-old experience with previous computers (which all happened to be Macs...)

I don't think I will buy a Lenovo product again.
