Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

2017-12-20, 4:56 AM

I have given up on the Yoga 920 and going back to my old Dell laptop. It isn't just USB-C to HDMI adapter that isn't working, I also purchased a USB-C to DisplayPort cable and that also doesn't work. Plugged the same cable to my phone and it works straight away. Seems like the USB-C port has problems displaying anything through any connector. I am hoping Lenovo fixes this asap, as i right now I have a 3K paperweight that I can't use for work.

Yes, I also think it is a common "external display through USB" problem and is not dedicated to a special adapter/vendor.

I also have a problem with the USB-C Travel Hub from Lenovo:

Ethernet and USB-Port is working, but neither the HDMI nor the VGA is working.

For me, I also need the VGA port, because there are sometimes projectors/customers which don't have HDMI yet.

I hope there will be a fix in the next days...

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

Just adding my voice.  USB C to HDMI worked great for over a months and as of yesteday it would not.  Microsoft sent me to lenovo. Lenovo chat was no help. I added my voice to Twitter.  Any advice is welcome.  So far:

1. Tried different cables

2. Tried two different adaptors

3. Tried different monitors

4. Installed driver from Lenovo site

5. MS support rep

6. Lenovo support rep

I cannot get the external display working with windows - P or by going into settings and detecting an external monitor.  The computer clearly registers a device because there is an audible sound when the USB c adaptor is plugged in.

Did you recently update to version 1709 of Windows? when I switched back to version 1703, it works fine for me again

@Mallet1 When I had 1703 it didn't work so I have 1709 now and I have limited functionality.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

2017-12-21, 1:47 AM

I'd just like to throw my name into this thread. I purchased my 920 a little over a month ago and have been pretty happy with it. Yesterday I purchased a USB C to HDMI adapter made by Uni on Amazon naively thinking I would have no problems as USB devices are designed to be plug n play. I am experiencing the same issues everyone else is. I have been successful with the procedure previously listed-turning PC off, plugging usb cable into PC, then turning PC on.

When simply plugging cable into PC already powered up I do get the Windows noise indicating something has been plugged in (rings twice). "USB 2.0 BILLBOARD" shows up at the bottom of my device manager however nothing happens from there. Windows + P has no effect and Display manager shows no other displays have been detected. For the record I am on Windows build 1709 with what I understand to be the latest BIOS (5NCN29WW).

Having to start from a cold boot just to use an external display seems quite ridiculous. I have not engaged support yet but from the looks of things this workaround may be the only option.

Seems like everyone is struggling and Lenovo support can not be least bit bothered to at lease chime in on this thread and provide an update or at least acknowledge the issue instead of their userbase spending hundreds of hours (cumulative time) in order to get the external display working.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

My Yoga 920 is my first Lenovo product. From this forum and my contact with tech support, it seems there are a lot of hardware issues (defects or components not working properly) with their laptops, and it's not a known issue with Lenovo, so the advice from tech support is to return it to the retailer if you are within the return window, or send it in for repair. I mean what is Lenovo doing with all these returns? I guess sell 'em as refurbs?

I have till Jan. 14 to return or exchange my unit at BestBuy, but what if I get a unit with other problems??? Right now at least both my TB3 ports work fine with my 8-in-1 hub regarding HDMI to my TV and ethernet, but I am getting WIFI problems. I'm sure there are others who are thinking: do I hang on to my unit in hopes software and BIOS updates will fix the problems down the line, or exchange for another unit only to encounter a different problem, or keep it and ultimately send it in for repair if it is something serious. But I don't like getting back a repaired product. I believe the HDMI issue can be fixed with drivers or BIOS updates, but right now I am not too sure if I am having a battery or WIFI issue (hardware related).

There's another thread about WiFi issues. If you're talking about 5 GHz networks while unplugged, there's a registry fix for that: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Very-slow-wifi-on-the-Yoga-920-confirmed-with-other-devices/m-p/3889629#M58305

Not sure on battery issues. Seems like running the screen at well below 4K takes much less juice than at full resolution (when I'm botted into Linux I run it at 1600x900 and get on the order of 10 hours of moderate use).

If your TB3 dock works as expected with video, keep the machine you've got. The WiFi issue is a quick driver-related fix and it sounds like you have a solid machine otherwise.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

2017-12-21, 17:22 PM

I know, I really like my Yoga 920, except for these quirks. I heard horror stories about warped frames, or loose hinges, but my frame is machined to perfection and hinge is tight. Really like the screen, even at just HD. But my unit runs hot, not all the time. Sometimes during charging the temps hit 80-90C, and HWINFO64 says CPU thermal throttling is going on with one of the cores. Fans will run maybe 30-40% of the time. I run PCMark10 to stress test my unit and temps do get hot but only during some tests. I ran some benchmark tests from AIDA64 and I get the message thermal overheating is occurring when temps occasionally hit 92 C. But I know laptops run hot in general and somebody posted on this forum Lenovo said it's a high performance, quad-core machine so expect some heat. And the surface of my Yoga just gets rather warm during all this.
