Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

2017-12-21, 17:36 PM
I'm running the laptop screen at full 4K all the time and don't have battery issues. I just don't run it full brightness and I'm getting 13 hour unless I'm testing code. Then it's a load on the processor and the battery which also raises the temp a bit. If they could get the fix done for the HDMI using their adapter, the machine would be perfect for me.
BTW, Lenovo does in fact know about the HDMI issue and has escalated it to an "administration" level, what ever that means, per a direct message I received on Twitter from @LenovoSupport.

I am glad that this elevated to that level. I am pretty sure that this is something to do some update on MS side that messes up the way USB-C is working. I am hoping that the problem can be solved with a small fix. Fingers crossed!

You can relieve much of the pain casued by the need to shutdown by hibernating instead. You will need to first enable (in windows settings) the Hibernation option in the power menu, then you will be able to hibernate, connect the dongle and turn the notebook back on...

At least it savees the need to close everything and restarting windows and the applications.

This looks promising.  Anyone care to give it a try?

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/HP-Laptops-and-Intel-UHD-Graphics-620-HDMI-Output/td-p/6472981

It's on an HP support site but sounds similar to our problem.

From the forum: "We found a solution for people who are having problems with Windows 10, after doing the update to Version 1709, and connecting screens or projectors connected to their HDMI output."

Their solution is to update the Intel UHD 620 Graphics driver, which can be downloaded from the Intel website.

I currently am unable to verify if indeed it will fix anything as I'll be away from my office (where the projector is located) until mid-January.

While it looked promising, the Intel 620 UHD driver is dated 10/27/17.  The problem has been been reported since then.  Plus, Intel says it is not for Lenovo Yoga 920's.

Intel instructs you to go back to the manufaturer for the proper driver.  I went to Lenovo's web site, downloaded the latest and greatest and started installation.  The installation aborted because the driver I had was the same revision.  Therefore, the problem remains.

Thanks for the thought El-Hombre.  I really wish it would have been the answer.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

I can confirm this doesn't solve the problem.

Note: I wouldn't recommend trying this. Doesn't fix anything, so why use a non-Lenovo sanctioned driver?

But what I did was download the latest Intel driver from Intel's site. The latest generic version of the 620 UHD driver is 23.20.16.4877 released on December 4, 2017. Since it's the generic version there's all kinds of warnings that device manufacturers may modify it and release their own versions - so you should download the latest from Lenovo, not Intel.

That being said, I was unafraid, so I downloaded the .zip version of 23.20.16.4877 (not the .exe) and manually upgraded the driver. Still seems to work just fine, but the LETSCOM USBC002 adaptor I have still wont push HDMI. Also tried with three other USB-C HDMI adaptors we have around the office... Another LETSCOM model and two other brand-X.

For now I'm using a CableMatters USB-C to DVI adaptor on my second USB-C port to drive an external monitor until this gets figured out.

Still an awesome laptop though :)

I finally rolled back windows. (I like having the latest versions so this was the last resort) it now works. I can connect to external monitors and extend the desktop. I am now running Windows 10 home Version 1703 build 15063.786

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

I think the biggest problem is Fall Creators Update is not still officially supported yet (920 is not in the Lenovo's support list). I would not be surprised if they are still ironing out some of the bugs they encountered over there, which is a shame as this laptop is probably one of theirs flagships, that update has been rolled out for two months by now, and even some of the selling features such as Dolby Atmos Headphone can be enabled only by that update (which I could not find anywhere to activate)..

I am hoping for a quick fix, but since everyone is on vacation usually these days and with CES on the horizon, I am not that hopeful until at least mid even end of January.. :(

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

2017-12-28, 3:18 AM

After several more conversations with Tech Service and a couple more visits with the Geek Squad at Best Buy, I took back my 920 and exchanged it for another identical computer.  As soon as I got it up and running I plugged the USB-C to HDMI cable and it worked.  On the fly, plug and play.  I did not shut down and plug in, I just plugged in.

Then, I started loading software.  As I shut down to reboot I got caught with a Windows update.  Well, that took care of the connection - the problem was back.  No connection to HDMI.

I then restored Windows to the factory load and noted key information:

     Display Adapter 6/16/17 22.20.16.4708

     Intel USB 3.0 Host Ctlr 4/27/17 10.0.15063.296

     Windows 10 10.0.15063 ver 1703

Then I turned off updates for these.  I reloaded everything and plugged in to the HDMI monitor (without a reboot) and it still worked plug and play.

Hopefully this is only a short term fix and Lenovo gets their act together and gets the updates done so we no longer have this problem and can start keeping our operating system and drivers up to date.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

2017-12-28, 16:16 PM

Hi all:

I appreciate all the good information here, as I am having the same problems as many of you.  I purchased my 920 direct from Lenovo (after sending back the 910 becasue it wont support dual monitors).  I figured I'd share my experience so far. For reference, I am running Windows 10 1709, and have the latest Intel driver 23.20.16.4849.

I have bought (and returned) several usb-c to HDMI/VGA adapters to date-many of the knock-off ones- and have had very little success. I tried the Best Buy Insignia one, and could not get it to work consistently.  My latest one is a Choetech HDMi/VGA adapter from Amazon.  After applying the latest BIOS update (this made a big difference), this adapter has worked well on the HDMI side.  I have had no issues with sleep/wake as others reported.  I did have to boot up with it plugged in, but not the HDMI cable.  I plugged that in after boot up. Hot swapping did not work.  I have only got the VGA side to work twice - still not sure of what sequence worked there.

My next step is to try docking stations for dual monitor support.  I have tried the Iogear, and it didnt work at all. I have ordered the Cable Creation one to see if that does the trick.  Ill post back once I recevie it and test it.

Hopefully, Lenovo gets their act together and fixes this problem, since it seems to be a big issue.
