Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

2018-03-15, 21:31 PM

Something similar happened to me with unit #2 that was shipped to me. My unit stopped charging and would not charge on either port. I found that the first port also didn't recognize any device connected to it. The second port did recognize a USB-C "hub" connected. The problem occured when testing hot-swaping of the hub.

I had Lenovo Send me unit #3, and Unit #2 eventually drained to 0 after I copied all my files off it. It sat until Unit #3 arrived, which turned out to be almost a week when I was able to get back from a business trip and setup Unit #3. I decided to test Unit #3 with the Power Adpater from #3. And bam it started charging. I check adpater from Unit #2 and it too charged the unit. Since my warranty had already been switched over to Unit #3 etc. and a unit had to ship back, I shipped back Unit #2.

However I did let Unit #2 fully charge and I checked and EVERYTHING USB-C wise worked.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

@Andy_Lenovo ,

I'm hoping you can help out.  I'm having a similar issue trying to connect to my Samsung 1080p tv via the lenovo usb c to hdmi adapter on the lenovo yoga 920.  It works ok in WINDOWS, but doesn't work well in LINUX (colors are all borked, like it's doing '16-bit" color from the Windows 3.1 days......)

In Windows 10 I've used Lenovo Vantage to make sure I'm up to date, but I have two questions:

1.)  How can I check to see if I have the latest firmware installed?  There aren't any updates available, but I don't remember updating the CCG4 firmware (I am on the "WW" BIOS though).

2.)  Is the updated firmware something that only affects windows, or is the chipset overwritten?  Specifically, is the firmware still in the chip when another OS loads, or does windows load the firmware into the chipset each time?

Thanks for any response.  I need to be able to connect to external monitors in Linux, and would hate to have to return the machine.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

Sorry,

Did all the updates, and I still didn't get any output to HDMI.  As a last resort, I decided to switch to an Amazon Basics USBC to HDMI cable and it worked.  Keep in mind, my basic Anpow USB C dongle with USBC/HDMI/USBA worked fine before with the Yoga 920.

The Anpow dongle works fine with the Yoga 910, My Macbook Pro 2017, and my Macbook 2015.

One day the Yoga 920 worked fine with my Anpow adapter, the next it doesn't. As a sidenote, I dual boot in fedora Linux and Windows 10, both of which used to output to HDMI just fine with the Anpow.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

Hello All,

I just got my Lenovo 920 and am looking to order two docking stations, one for home and one for office.

Are there any recommendations on third-party ones that work reliably?  I just need something with a few USB ports, HDMI/VGA/DVI, and of course charging capabilities.

Would I need to get another dongle for projectors?  At work, we mainly use HDMI, do I suppose an HDMI to USB C dongle?

I read through the thread, and it seems like lot of issues with third party docks, but they seem to have been resolved after the firmware update.

Much appreciate your recommendations.  Btw, the Lenovo website is doing a terrible job showing any options, I search for USB C dock for lenovo 920, and half the pages don't load, no clear recommendations either.

Thank you!

Here's what I use at home - work great (long title of items for easy searching on Amazon):

  • General docking station and extra monitor ports as needed: Plugable Universal USB 3.0 Docking Station with Dual Video Outputs and 4K Support for Windows 10, 8.1, 7 (HDMI & DVI/VGA, Gigabit Ethernet, Audio, 4 USB 3.0 Ports, VESA mount Aluminum Mini)
  • A cheaper option might be: Wavlink USB 3.0 Universal Laptop Docking Station Dual Video Monitor Display DVI, HDMI,VGA,Gigabit Ethernet, Audio, 4 USB Ports, 2 USB Charging Port , Ultrabook and PC-Black, but I haven't tried it.

For work:

  • Lenovo USB-C Hub, Type C Adapter with HDMI Port, Gigabit Ethernet Port, USBC Charging Port, 2 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 Ports, SD/TF Card Reader
  • plus a VicTsing HDMI to VGA Converter Adapter with Micro USB Charging Cord for PC, Laptop, DVD, Desktop and other HDMI Input Devices – Black
  • and TAIFU 65W USB-C Charger for HP SPECTRE X360 ELITE X2 SPECTRE ELITEBOOKLENOVO YOGA

Thank you for the detailed information!

Will search on Amazon. if you have a brand that works for you, please let me know. I am assuming the cable from the dock that plugs in to the usb c port will charge the laptop, as well as enable all other connections such as monitor via hdmi and ethernet and any plugged in usb devices with a single cable.

is there a reason to buy a different one for work? I was thinking about just buying two of these.

Thanks!

At home I use the two USB C ports to run 4K monitors and charge, the hub used is on the USB 3 port.

  • Power and one of my 4K monitors: USB Type C Adapter, Belinda USB C Type to DisplayPort/ DP Adapter Cable With Power Aluminum Case Support 4K 60HZ resolution
  • For the other 4K monitor: Cable Matters USB-C to DisplayPort Cable Supporting 4K 60Hz in Black 10 Feet (Thunderbolt 3 Port Compatible)

For work I just need a small USB C adapter for video out (HDMI) and ethernet conections. The Lenovo hub works great for that plus adds SD card support.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

I've tried several 3rd party Thunderbolt and/or USB-C hubs/docks/cables (including several that were mentioned earlier on this thread). Most would work well for a while, then some strange things happened. Frustrated, I ended up returning everything, including the first Yoga 920.

Then, looking around for another laptop that would have comparable hardwares like the Yoga 920, I found none, unless spending significant more. Even so, there is no guarantee that spending more would mean trouble free.

So, I acquired another Yoga 920, and a Lenovo Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - 40AC0135US, plus a 3.3 ft Thunderbolt 3 Active Cable.

The dock was $220 & the cable was $23, no tax + free shipping. All worked well together for about 2 months now, with 2 x 2K displays @75 hz and several other external devices and gigabit LAN.

This setup allowed only one connection from the dock to the laptop for charging as well as data. Super neat.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

Thanks, TPham!

I don't mind spending extra, reliability is #1 criteria for me, knowing that once you have it, it will work fine for long term.

I can possibly get away with the Lenovo Hub for my work location, at Home, definitely need the thunderbolt dock.  I simply use 1080P monitors, so my setup is not complicated at all.  One 1080P monitor, Ethernet, two/three USB devices, and that is it! SD card slots would be a bonus.

I definitely want the charging capability so I don't have to plug/unplug the charging cable everyday at home.  (Want single cable to connect to laptop so everything comes on.) I want to keep the one that came with the laptop as my backup one in my laptop case, and have extra cables that I keep permanently plugged at work and home.

What kind of specs to look at for charging cable, 60W or 65W, and the output is 3A? Do 3rd party charging cables work fine?

The active cable you linked to shows up as $109!
