Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

Thank you, Casniki!

I think since I need the charging capability, the hubs that use USB 3 port are not a good option. I think I need to look at Lenovo thunderbolt dock. Are you aware of any other USB C docks/hubs that allow charging and work reliably with 920?

@LeoPete,
Messing with 3rd party charging docks would be a risk. I'd avoid it, no matter what the advertisers may say. I've been there, done that, and paid dearly for that.
The Lenovo Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - 40AC0135US comes with a shorter PASSIVE thunderbolt cable, which should work fine. The j5Create Thunderbolt 3 ACTIVE Cable is indeed expensive. I bought it from BLINQ. They had several @ $23 so I jumped at it. The longer length gives some flexibility in placing the dock, but not necessary.
I don't mean that the '40AC0135US' is the only game in town. There are others that may provide good services at cheaper cost. Good luck.

USB C adapters with charging ports are becoming more available so you probably could find others. Challenge I had was finding one that accepted the wattage of the Lenovo charger. I've been very happy with the Belinda USB C adapter for DisplayPort out and power in. The Lenovo hub also accepts the higher wattage is small and portable - just no DP out. For work that's not an issue as we don't have any conference rooms with DP. Using the USB 3 for the hub frees up the two C ports for 60Hz 4K. I think it might be difficult to do that over HDMI if you used a C port hub with HDMI out.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

Day1 - I just unpacked my Lenovo Yoga 920-13IKB Type 80Y7 and performed the steps below:

 1. Let MS Windows download and finish with updates, then reboot.
 2. Go to https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/yoga-series/yoga-920-13ikb/80y7/downloads
 3. BIOS/UEFI > BIOS Update (5NCN38WW)
 4. USB Device, FireWire, IEEE 1394 > Intel Thunderbolt Driver (17.1.64.250)
 5. USB Device, FireWire, IEEE 1394 > USB Ethernet Adapter Driver (10.16.321.2017)
 6. Advanced Firmware > Type C Firmwware (1.3)
 7. Shutdown
 8. Plugged the Letscom USB-C hub model USBC002 on the port closest to the front of the laptop
 9. Turn on laptop
10. Plug HDMI, USB 16GB thumb drive, & RJ45 cable

Everything works as it should.  I have the laptop screen plus another monitor (1920X1080), wired network and I can see my USB thumb drive.

I will post an update in 1 week if anything changes.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

I ordered the Lenovo Thunderbolt Dock. It is expensive for sure, but hopefully, once it arrives, I can just plug it in and forget about it.

Also ordered the Lenovo USB-C 4 in 1 Travel Docking Station with HDMI, VGA, USB 3.0 and RJ45, 100% compatible for Lenovo Yoga 920, Yoga 720, Flex 5 and IdeaPad Laptops, GX90M61235.

This one is for work.  It has enough reviews, and is from Lenovo, so hopefully, it works just fine.

Also ordered  CableCreation USB-C to HDMI 4K + VGA Adapter, Thunderbolt 3 Compatible, for MacBook/Macbook Pro/Chromebook Pixel/Dell XPS 13/Surface Book 2/Yoga 920/Samsung S8/HUAWEI Mate 10, Space Gray, 20 CM - as Backup for my laptop bag.

This is the only 3rd party product, so fingers crossed on it.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

I'm curious about the Lenovo Thunderbolt Dock is as it doesn't support dual 4K 60 Hz feeds to DP, and HDMI out is only 30 Hz. Of course if you have a Thunderbolt 4K monitor and a DP 4K one, the two are supposed to work at 4K 60 Hz. I see in the Lenovo Thunderbolt Dock manual it states:

  • One external monitor – DP: 3840 x 2160 pixels / 60 Hz – HDMI: 3840 x 2160 pixels / 30 Hz – Thunderbolt 3: 3840 x 2160 pixels / 60 Hz – VGA: 1920 x 1200 pixels / 60 Hz
  • Two external monitors - DP1 and Thunderbolt 3: DP1 3840 x 2160 pixels / 60 Hz; Thunderbolt 3 3840 x 2160 pixels / 60 Hz

Each USB C port on the laptop can output DP at 3840 x 2160 pixels / 60 Hz with just a cable - very cool. The USB 3 port can run other peripherals (dock) as needed.

Let me know how it works for you:-)

Perhaps these info's may be of help to some:

. Display and Video Output Configurations - Docking Stations

. Support Phone List: Yoga 920-13IKB Notebook (ideapad). English > 877-453-6686 > 24 hours/day 7 days/week

DisplayPort Cable that worked and not expensive.

Alternate and/or enhanced dock: Lenovo G0A10170UL Thunderbolt 3 Graphics Dock

. Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Graphics Dock - Overview

. Thunderbolt 3 Graphics Dock Driver

. Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Graphics Dock - Forum Support

. Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Graphics Dock - Review

This item may be next on my list :smileywink:

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

John,

I had the same problem on my Sony Bravia 49" 4K tv. In order to get things working, I booted into Windows, and it worked fine, then rebooted (not shut down) into Linux and it worked.  I'm on Fedora 27.

Re: Yoga 920 USB C to HDMI not working

i've bought Lenovo 920 and after about a month i've finaly was able to find a working USB HUB.
Lenovo USB-C C-109

initialty every thing was fine, i've connected external monitor DELL P2416D without any problems
After about week windows decided to crash with "watchdog_timeout" BSOD, and now the i connect usb hub and power supply to Yoga display on yoga turns off, if i disconnect power supply  it turn back on again.
And it does not metter if power supply pluged in to the USB hub or directly

anyone had the same issue ?

The Watchdog Timeout error is usually a driver issue or something wrecked with a Windows Update. Were I you, I'd disconnect everything and use System Restore to roll the computer back to a point before anything happened. Perhaps a point before you installed the dock. Then let the computer take the Windows Update and any driver updates, again. Make sure all the drivers and the BIOS are up to date before re-connecting any of your external devices. Do a couple of reboots and play with it a while before connecting the dock.

If you're still getting the display issue, check to make sure Windows didn't mess with your power settings. It's been known to happen. Especially the brightness sliders.
