Yoga Book SD Card limitation

2016-11-14, 19:42 PM

The advertising says that the Yoga Book will take up to a 128GB MicroSD card but it won't work with my 64GB card.

It appears that it requires the card to be formatted as FAT32 to be compatible but FAT32 only supports devices up to 32GB.  After several attempts I re-partitioned my card using a PC with a 32Gb partition and formatted that as FAT32.  Success.

It would also be very useful if there was some technical support in the UK. No phone support, no email support, no chat support; why, when we are paying more in the UK than people in the US who get all the support channels?

Re: Yoga Book SD Card limitation

I have the Yoga Book windows version and bought a Samsung 128GB EVO mcroSDXC UHS-I Card, put it in the tray and it shows up and works as a fast 128GB drive.  I did not format it or anything.  SD cards are confusing as there are so many variations of specifications but the Yoga Book does work with a 128GB card, no limitation.  I think -but am not at all sure - that the format it came with is designated as exFat.

Thanks for the replies.  Turns out it was a problem with that SD Card when used in the Yoga Book.  The card worked ok in a lenovo Yoga Tab 2 where it formated but stil caused errors back in the Yoga Book.

Having replaced the Card with another 64GB one it is now working good.

I did not mention that I have the Android version of the Yoga Book which creates another problem with SD cards.  In Android Marshmallow each app has to be authorised by the user to access the SD card, but if you change the SD card it doesn't seem to allow you to re-authorise.  You can get round this for most apps by reinstalling them but the stock file browser can't be reinstalled so it now can't use the SD card.

Try formatting it extra and it should be fine. I have a 128th card in my Yogo Book windows machine and it works.

No, you have to format on FAT32. Here the tool to do that : http://tamigne.ovh/pro-tips/pro-tips-formater-une-carte-micro-sd-64-go-en-fat-32/. It works perfectly.

I don't understand why people that don't know reply exFAT that doesn't work.

Sounds like an answer exists in the FAQ

How to format internal storage/external SD card - YOGA Book (Android)

https://support.lenovo.com/fr/fr/solutions/ht502215

Can you check it and come back with a feedback?

Perhaps there is some confusion because the Yoga Book comes in both Windows 10 and Android versions. My Win10 Yoga Book has a 128GB sd card preformatted in exFAT and works just fine.  That is why I have said to some that exFAT works, itdoesfor me but maybe only in the Windows version.

I also have an yoga book with windows version. And this is my experience : I bought a 200 Gb Sd from Sandisk. It is an exFat as I bought, I used it in 1 week, and problems happened, it was missing from the system suddenly, I must took it out and in several times a day, it brought me in crazy.  Many times I tried to fix and I have got a good life when I did this :

- Format it properly (no quick) with NTFS in your own Yoga , and it worked smoothly from now on even faster.

Thanks God.

From the description of the "171013" OTA update (which I think became available only a few days ago):
"Key updates:
1. Added support for exFAT file system and support for files larger than 4GB.
2. Fixed some known issues."

I have not yet added an SD-card to my just-purchased Yoga Book, but from the description above it appears SD-cards up to 128GB should now be usable without issues.

Re: Yoga Book SD Card limitation

2018-06-04, 19:43 PM

THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH YOGA BOOK'S MICRO SD CARD DRIVER.

When I asked the support team at Lenovo, they said that Yoga Book wasn't capable of reading Micro SD HC or Micro SD XC due to a hardware limitation (format incompatibility) and that it only supported micro SD cards formatted in FAT32 but that is not the case. After formatting 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB cards in FAT32 file system with a free tool called 2MiniAide FAT32 Formatter" (which works great by the way!) the problem remained.

I also tried partiotioning the cards with several partitions, all lower than 32 GB, and I didn't work either.

SOLUTION:

Install "Realtek Card Reader Driver for Windows 10" from Lenovo's website (link below) and restart your Yoga Book. This completely and permanently solved the problem. I've used cards with the following capacities and formats, they all work great: 16 GB, 32 GB, 64GB and 128 GB; microSD HC and microSD XC (ultra high speed from 1 up to 3); NTFS, exFAT and FAT32.

https://support.lenovo.com/mx/es/downloads/ds031825

I spend several days trying to find the fix for this problem so I hope this post can be useful to all of you.

P.S. English isn't my native language so I apologyse for any mistake.

your solution is for a Windows Yoga Book.  This thread is about SD card issues with the Android version.

Re: Yoga Book SD Card limitation

2018-12-18, 10:38 AM

Hi,

I want to update this topic because I have the same issue on my Yoga Book Windows 10 Pro 1809.
It's a second hand and it's totally refreshed with a new Win10 version with yoga book drivers (cf https://forum.xda-developers.com/yoga-book/how-to/windows-guide-creating-windows-10-t3718823). I don't know how it worked before.
All is functional and up-to-date.

I have a microSD Samsung Evo + 128Go (which is a 32Go I think, a counterfeit but it's not the subject). it's recognized by the system, the drive appears and write/read is OK (but long).

I bought yesterday a SanDisk Ultimate Pro 128Go class 10 U3. But it's not recognized by Windows...

1/ When I insert the tray with the card, I can hear the Windows sound when you connect something. So Windows "knows" that there's somethinh new.
2/ Briefly I see the connexion icon on the right-bottom of the desktop, but it disappears quickly. No other sound.
3/ Drive letter is not visible and in computer management, there's no additional drive, only the internal drive.
4/ In device management, there's a line (SD controller host or something like that) with a yellow symbol, error code 10. But I can't fix it, Windows update finds nothing more.

5/ When I pull the tray, the disconnection sound can be heard.
6/ SDcard is OK on another PC and I tried all format types (exFAT, FAT32, NTFS) but same issue.
7/ Note that I have a Yoga Book with Android (so the same hardware I think) and this card was recognized and full functional...

I tried to install Realtek driver (as topic https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Yoga-Book-Android/Yoga-Book-SD-Card-limitation/td-p/3481360/page/2 ) but nothing more, this driver is not activated in device management. Same issue.

Even if I use the other card Samsung which is recognized, the RealTek driver is not activated.

I have to uninstall something before ? There's a conflict somewhere ?

I'm lost... Thanks for your help !

Re: Yoga Book SD Card limitation

I have the same problem as the people before

We bought a sandisk extreme microsdxc uhs-1 128GB

It can be read correctly on other devices, so it is not sd card problem

Formatted to both NTFS and exFat... no result

Tried installing the realtek drivers... no result... better, no good result, now I get an alert sign in the device manager near the corresponding sd storage class controller saying the device cannot be started.

Can any Lenovo tech shed any light on what is happening?

Should I give up hope having this sd card working on our Yoga Book?

Re: Yoga Book SD Card limitation

There are several and complicated norms about SD cards.

This link is very interesting https://www.sdcard.org/consumers/index.html

The problem with Yoga Book is not a capacity problem but bus speed. If it's too high, it's not recognized.

You must buy low speed SD card, as generic brand you can find in classic store.

If your card show an U with a number  inside, it's sure that it won't work.

If I understood well, a SD card which works on Yoga Book must be in 3.00 version or earlier. From 3.01 it's often KO.
