Yoga C640 Noisy and Hot

2019-12-15, 22:39 PM

Hi everyone! Just got the new Yoga C640 laptop with i7 10510U and I have to say I am pretty dissapointed!

The fan on this thing is very noisy with high pitch turbine like sound, but the worst part is the behaviour of it. It runs most of the time and sometimes goes into annoy-the-hell-outta-everyone mode when it starts going on and off every other second for like a minute or two.

Additionally, CPU easily reaches 90 C before it throttles when browsing and doing other light activities.

Since I am new to Yoga line, wanted to ask the community if this is normal behaviour, particularly fan turning on and off every other second? Initially I though i7 is to blame for this, but the new intel line runs very low on power and has the same TDP as i5, so that should not be the cause.

If anyone else recently got this laptop, can you confirm if your fan also makes high pitch noise when running?

Thinking returnign this laptop but wanted to hear your thoughts first. Thanks!

Having the same issue. Looks like a Laptop, sounds like a Server. Also the speakers made crackling sound, even when no audio was on.

Fan calmed down a bit after while, but just browsing made him incedibly noisy again. Not able to work with this situaion. Returned mine, hoping the next one is better manufactured.

Thanks for your feedback! I guess they've just placed a raw product on the market! Will be initiating my return as well.

Hi there,

Just got a new C640 and it is noisy as hell and blowing like a hairdryer just out of the box... Is there any update or solution on this issue?

I tried already all these tips for other models of the series... but it is still the same: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Lenovo-Yoga-C740-15-quot-fan-noise/td-p/4588245

If there is no immediate solution from Lenovo I will definitively send it back...

As of now there is no solution.

Unfortunately Lenovo does not seem to be interested in acknowledging and fixing this issue. I have returned my original purchase for a replacement which had the same issue. The most ridiculous thing that annoys the hell out of me is fan tuning on and off every other second for absolutely no reason.

I really started questioning the design aspect of this laptop. The heat pipe and thermal dissipation areas are way too weak to handle i7. I don't even know if it is adequate for i5. Heat pipe that goes from CPU to radiator is as thin as a credit card if not thinner. This leads me to believe that radiator area just does not have enough time to dissipate all the heat even after CPU has been idling for some time, thus is the annoying fan behavior. On top of that it seems like Lenovo SCM has sourced the loudest fan they could have possibly found for this model.

What bugs me is that they could have easily fitted a much larger cooling solution in this laptop and get rid of these problems all together.

That's a pity. I'll then return it. If it is a bad coolling system design, the fan can be fixed. But the heat will become an issue. There are 5 more laptops at home between old machines, working laptops and daily ones. From X1 to a more modest Ideapad. Only an 11 years old MacBook Pro under a bit of computational stress reaches that level of noise :(

Sounds about right! Here is the actual video I took of the annoy-the-hell-outta-everyone fan mode! There are literally 2 tabs open in chrome and CPU is idling, temps low yet it is still doing its thing.

Has Lenovo responded with a fix for the noisy fan issue? Seems like 4-5 months since the issue was first raised. I haven't seen a response from a Rep as yet.

I can understant that you delete some messages from the forum. Fortunately, I learnt how to find info in google, but at least some link to already suggested solutions for the other series of Cx40 yoga series would have been nice from Lenovo support.

By the way, neither really worked. At some point it went a bit more silent, but with sudden spasmodic fan operations noisy as usual...

I really like the series, but I am afraid I would have to suffer these issues in most of their models. Are there some faulty batches or it is an issue of the whole series?

Unfortunately, I guess we all come here to complain... Are there other users with silent and reasonable behavior?
