Yoga C930 4K screen not detected as HDR in Windows 10

A big part of why I purchased the C930 was for its 4K Dolby Vision screen. However, I can't seem to be able to view any content in HDR. I followed the guidelines set forth from this Microsoft support page:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4040263/windows-10-hdr-advanced-color-settings

There are no options for HDR in the display settings and dxdiag shows the screen as not supporting HDR. More importantly, nothing I view seems to show up in HDR. I've watched Youtube videos through Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, and videos through the Netflix app, and none of them look like they're in HDR.

I have all of the latest updates according to Windows update and Lenovo Vantage. The included Dolby Vision app has 3 settings but they don't seem to make a difference.

Is there some way to enable HDR on this laptop?

Thanks!

Re: Yoga C930 4K screen not detected as HDR in Windows 10

Hi ww007,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Since you've already tried the steps provided by Microsoft and still not getting the option to enable HDR. It means that the UHD LCD Panel on your laptop doesn't have HDR support.

Regards,

Re: Yoga C930 4K screen not detected as HDR in Windows 10

The Yoga C930 is advertised as having Dolby Vision:

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/yoga/yoga-c-series/Yoga-C930-13IKB/p/88YGC900982

Dolby Vision is an HDR format:

https://www.dolby.com/us/en/brands/dolby-vision.html

Therefore, the C930 is advertised as having HDR. If it doesn't actually have HDR, then that would be a big problem.

So has anyone at Lenovo looked into this issue?

Re: Yoga C930 4K screen not detected as HDR in Windows 10

Hi! Having the Dolby doesn't mean it's on HDR. It should specify on the product specs. You can refer to the product specs of your Yoga C930 here: https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/Lenovo_Tablets_and_Convertibles/Yoga_Book_C930. It did not specify HDR on the specs. We have a sample device(Thinkpad X1 Yoga) here with HDR and it is specify on the specs that it has one: https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/Think_Tablets_and_Convertibles/ThinkPad_X1_Yoga_3rd_Gen. Hope this helps.

Regards

Re: Yoga C930 4K screen not detected as HDR in Windows 10

Look, he is not talking about the Yoga Book C930 which you linked, he is talking about the Yoga C930 laptop with the Dolby Atmos Soundbar and the Dobly Vision HDR Screen Panel. By the way, I am writing this from my Yoga C930-131KB and I am experiencing the same problems. Since Lenovo decided to make two devices with nearly identical names that seems to be confusing its own employees, I will include a few pictures to clarify any issues. Below, is the description of the Lenovo Yoga C930 on your website.Yoga c930 laptop specs.PNG

And for those who will try to make the argument that Dolby Vision is not HDR, here is a screen grab from Dolby's Website explaining Dolby Vision. Dolby Vision.PNG

Re: Yoga C930 4K screen not detected as HDR in Windows 10

Sorry for the confusion. Here is the detailed specs of Yoga C930 laptop, https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/Lenovo%20Tablets%20_%20Convertibles/Yoga%20C930%20(14_)/Yog.... Currently, the Lenovo laptops with HDR screen are ThinkPad X1 Yoga 3rd gen (PSREF: https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/Think_Tablets_and_Convertibles/ThinkPad_X1_Yoga_3rd_Gen) and ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen (PSREF: https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_X1_Carbon_6th_Gen)

Re: Yoga C930 4K screen not detected as HDR in Windows 10

Ok, so that leads to another natural question. What is up with the false advertising on Lenovo's side? The product is clearly advertised on your website as having Dolby Vision which is an HDR Product made by Dolby. Looks like you all decided to deploy deceptive marketing tactics. Thankfully I am within my return period so this is going right back and I will be getting the newly updated Spectre.

Re: Yoga C930 4K screen not detected as HDR in Windows 10

I don't think there is false advertisement. Dolby Vision also enhances the image and pixel quality. Results can be viewed best with HDR LCD screen but will still work on 4K non-HDR Screens as well.

Re: Yoga C930 4K screen not detected as HDR in Windows 10

I agree with Braxton, this is very deceptive marketing. Lenovo and Dolby should be ashamed of themselves for labeling this screen as Dolby Vision if it does not have HDR. I mean who's going to look at that spec sheet page before they buy the laptop? Even if they do, they're not going to compare it to another Lenovo laptop that does have an HDR screen; they would probably just assume that the lack of an "HDR" label on that page was merely an oversight. This is the only Dolby Vision screen I've ever heard of that does not have HDR (laptop, TV, or otherwise).

And consumers aren't the only people that have been fooled. Check out these professional reviews that mention the screen as being HDR:

https://www.pcmag.com/review/363302/lenovo-yoga-c930

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/10/lenovo-yoga-c930-2-in-1-review-hidden-features-in-all-the-ri...

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Yoga-C930-13IKB-i5-8250U-FHD-Convertible-Review.343566.0.html

PC Magazine, Ars Technica... These aren't exactly obscure no name web sites. Are they being provided the wrong marketing information by Lenovo when receiving these laptops for review?

Interestingly, in the Notebook Check review, they mention: "Lenovo confirmed that both panels are Dolby Vision compatible despite the fact that the FHD panel is not detected as an HDR display (unlike the HDR panels in Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1)."

That would've been the time for Lenovo to clarify, "Yeah, the screen is Dolby Vision, but it doesn't have HDR."

That begs another question: what exactly is Dolby Vision doing for this screen then, if not HDR? It's not very bright (300 nits) and has mediocre color accuracy, gamut, and contrast per the above reviews (at least for the 1080p version; Lenovo didn't supply any of the reviewers with the 4k screen for some reason).

Needless to say, this has been a very disappointing revelation.

Also want to point out on your own youtube page you have a video with some of your employees describing the product as "Dolby Vision HDR"
