Re:Yoga C940 4k - Fan runs constantly

2020-06-22, 14:09 PM

I just purchased my Yoga C940-14IIL (i7/4k). Its a great machine with the EXCEPTION of the **bleep** fan. Which is annoying the hell out of me. I can't understand why the fans are audible with just a browser open. I've certainly heard worse fans, but they are just audible enough to make me question the purchase.

Hoping that somebody can provide a fix in the near future.

Freddie

I honestly think there is no fix for this. It is a hardware issue, i opened the laptop multiple times, taped different sections, and i never got rid of the "whistling" sound of the fans which gets to my nerves.
My old yoga 910 never whistled even at full speed.

Only solution is to use throttlestop to disable turbo on the cpu if you need to be quiet. But that is like buying a ferrari and driving it at 20 mph all the time in first gear. Still, i do that when i need silence.
If the sound is annoying for you, return it while you can

Cheers!

on top of what Gusssss replied above, i observed if you do not connect the ac power, the fan would run less frequently probably due to the charging heat. my unit is extremely hot near the speaker area when ac is plugged in.also by manually changing the operation mode by fn+q can quiet down the fan for a few seconds

In a perfect world the following steps shouldn't be needed, but as we all know such thing doesn't exist. If you like the C940 otherwise and are willing to go the extra mile you will be rewarded with a mostly quiet system. Even while charging.

If you are not willing to spend your time with this "tinkering" i can fully understand you. Lenovo did a horrible job on the thermals and thunderbolt/USB-C/charging front.

While my C940 is charging and with my normal workflow (20+ firefox tabs and several other programs running in the background), 26° room temperature, it mostly stays below 50°. Therefor no fan noise at all. Occcasionally the fans still kick on, but that is fine with me.

  1. Setup a fresh windows10 version. Monitor + adjust which programs are on auto start / run in background.
  2. Try the "air inlet tape mod" thing, which i posted.
  3. Cover the heat pipes with thermal pads, just keep sure to keep the air inlet free. So u can't cover the whole heat pipe with thermal pads. Use thermal pads with ~ 1.0-1.5mm thickness. The thermal pads will "connect" the heat pipes with the aluminium backcover and therefor create a much bigger heat dissipation area. Arctic thermal pads are pretty cheap and they have worked for me, since my XPS 9550 times.
  4. Adjust the windows10 battery/power mode slider, bottom right.
  5. Switch to battery mode via Lenovo Vantage, if you need more power for a specific workflow switch to intelligent/power mode.
  6. Undervolt the CPU/iGPU via throttlestop.

Hi! Great post!

can you elaborate more about step #3? Maybe post some pictures?

i tried everything in your list except that.

The tape mod never really worked for me, and if it did it was ever so slightly that barely worth the effort.

Unfortunatly i didn't take any pictures and i don't want to open it again.

But i just made a sloppy picture for you. Should be pretty self-explanatory.

You could also customize the thermal pads even more by cutting them out exactly according to the shape of the heat pipes, so that you don't have gaps in between the different retangulars. Maybe even cover some of those VRMs at the top of the CPU and on the right side.

Re:Yoga C940 4k - Fan runs constantly

I received my C940, 4k, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD yesterday and I can confirm that it has the same annoying fan noise even in idle mode.

Check out this recording.

I did the following:

  • Update all Windows and Lenovo drivers to the latest versions
  • Update the BIOS to aucn54ww.exe
  • Undervolt the CPU to ~-60mV
  • Toggle the Intelligent Cooling mode (which is not that intelligent)

Nothing worked! I can hear the same noise even if the laptop is not charging. It goes for like one minute, then it stops for 5 seconds, and then it starts all over again. Using Edge instead of Chrome doesn't help either.

Shame on Lenovo if they were aware of this issue when they released the C940. Unless the noise magically goes away soon, I'm gonna return it.

For a completely different laptop, from a completely different manufacturer.
