Re: Yoga C940 4k - Fan runs constantly

The problem for me is also the loudness of the fan .... When it starts it is a high pitched and very aggressive fan. Compared to my desktop where the fan is running all the time but not bothering me at all. Do you experience the same?

Yes, the high pitched noise was the first thing I noticed in the fan sound. I've seen that the high pitch is not audible when I use the laptop on a bed so that the bottom ventilation grille is covered. This of course doesn't help at all with the cooling, but makes the noise somewhat more tolerable. I've been thinking if the high pitch actually comes from air blowing fast through the bottom grill and not the fan itself.

Hi everybody, so it might be just a software issue because after turning off battery saving mode in Lenovo Vantage the notebook is quiet, the temperature went down and the remaining time on batter went up for me.

Hey everyone, is the fan problem still present today or did they solve it through updates?

Hey all,

problem persists. I got the C940 i7 16gb RAM FHD model. My CPU temps are ok (improved performance setting, inteligent cooling on, around 55° C with 10 tabs open, and Netflix streaming with plugged in AC - not perfect, but within the possible operating range of the processor I guess). The fan's noise is not too bad, but they're definitely running a lot. At around 20% CPU usage, I wouldn't expect the necessity to keep the fans running for the better part of the use time. It's definitely a lot better when it is running on battery, during that it does barely turn on the fan while browsing the web and watching a stream. I'm spending a lot of time in libraries, so I'm kinda dependent on a silent device. I got the newest Windows 10 version 1909 installed, and checked the BIOS version. Except for the fan problem it is a beautiful device, I hope thermal performance can be improved with future updates (and please hurry doing so ;) )

Definitely weird behaviour!

Have you tried setting the notebook to passive cooling in the battery settings? Also disable intelligent cooling through Vantage and set it to cool and quiet.

Lastly try throttlestop to downvolt the CPU.

What is the concensus on the fan noise - was it resolved or improved with bios updates?

Is it possible that the thermal transfer is not quite up to par from the factory on all the C940s, has anybody tried repasting the CPU on one of these to see if there is any improvement? ...other than that, perhaps throttling it back slightly through the performance profile to 95%?

I have one of these on order, the UHD with 16GB/512GB SSD, and noticed no significant complaints about fan noise in any of the reviews, if anything they refer to the dual fans as quieter than the C930 was.. though perhaps most reviews were not with the UHD screen!

I accepted there would be poorer battery life from the UHD, not a major fan noise issue.  I have seen today that one C940 owner is complaining the idle temperatures are also remaining too high - 40-50+ degrees, is anybody seeing this issue as well?

What is the 'performance profile'? Are you referring to throttlestop?

You Tube Reviewer are mostly not real life users.. they test the device for maybe an hour.. you can see many people complaining about this issue.. As to my knowledge nothing got solved. I got both the uhd and the fhd version.. Both had the same issue. I maybe ording anohter one to see if i have more luck, but after that im done with the device.

The fact that nobody from lenovo is commenting on the posts about the fan, should also speak volume to you.

I hope you have luck with your device.. Keep us updated.

No, not throttlestop, I was referring to going into your power settings, and modifying the maximum processor power battery and power connected settings from 100% to perhaps 90-95. ie- the power plan under additional settings, processor power management, and lowering the maximum power state.
