Re: Yoga C940 4k - Fan runs constantly

Yep, that is a genuine fasten seat belts and park the tray tables noise.  I dont get that turbine whine on mine at all.

I also get that high pitched whine but only when under heavy load, so the fans spin up to maximum speed. It seems like there are three levels, barely audible - "normal" speed - jet engines.

Unfortuntely since yesterday I've been getting the Intel Optane Memory Service process pegging the CPU, so the fans are permanently on as the idle temperature is approaching the surface of the sun.

Personally I've already boxed the computer back up to be returned. I'm hoping these issues can be resolved by Lenovo through a firmware update... hopefully before my return window expires and it has to go back, since I consider this kind of unusably loud and hot.

To those suggesting undervolting... hacks like that should totally not be necessary for a several thousand dollar machine.

FWIW, you can disable the intel optane feature, which is of dubious utility anyway.

I had the optane-cpu-hammer going on and since disabling it the system has behaved much better.

If I ever get that replace the current SSD, it won't have any intel optane on it :)

Mine is really close to going back too.. but I can't find a better option.

I've currently got Dell's 9365 2n1 (last generation) and already been through two HP Spectre 13" which returned due to poor quality..

My nitpicks on this lenovo (in descending order) are the charging problems, screen contrast, lack of media keys and fans. Intel optane now has workaround...

Agree 100% - I might understand messing with clocks for extreme performance nuts, but never on a brand new *premium* laptop that I just want to work decently.

I returned the laptop, I don't want to take chances with exchange for same model and what if the other unit has the fan problem as well? Went with Surface Laptop 3. Good luck all.

Re: Yoga C940 4k - Fan runs constantly

Hello all.

So I tried undervolting the CPU, and could get down to a voltage of -0.080 before the system crashed - not unlike what others have experienced. It lowered the temps by around 2 degrees celsius. Have not tried switching fan settings in the BIOS. Does anyone know what key to press during boot to get into the BIOS settings?

Regarding fan noise:

  • In my use case, the fan rarely turns on when using the laptop for Chrome, Evernote, Word and some other lighter applications.
  • When plugged in, the fans start to kick in and is turned on for around 60% of the charging time. However, this is not a problem for me, because:
  • I get around 8-9 hours of usage on one full charge. This means that when I come home, I will put my laptop to sleep mode, plug it in, and let it charge in sleep mode while doing something else like cooking dinner. The result = no fans 95% of the time.

I realize that not everyone will be able to go with this strategy, but this way I get to enjoy many of the good aspects of this computer while avoiding the dreaded fan noise. Still, the fan doesn't sound as bad as the two sound bites that were posted in this thread.

Overall, I've found that I've been able to live with the fan noise, although I really hope that Lenovo or Windows fixes the fan activation curve in a future update.

F2 (or Fn + F2) will get you in there. Btw do you have the FHD or 4k model? That battery life is impressive, I was only getting ~4 hours on my 4k model.

Thanks! Will try to play around with the fan settings, hopefully it will help a bit.

Oh yeah, my specs are: i7, 16GB, UHD, 1TB.

Well, I think my use case is very light compared to others. I didn't buy this laptop to perform heavy duty tasks, just notetaking and multimedia consumption.

@Mizard13 - would you share if the 1TB drive also has Optane?

I'm thinking about returning my c940-14"-UHD and custom ordering FHD (i7, 16GB, 1tb) but I don't want Optane if I can avoid it...

their ordering system doesn't really show if it's another optane-enabled drive or not..

Going back to the high-pitched sound - a service request has been made in my case and tomorrow I'm sending my Yoga to Lenovo. I had to delete my stuff but luckily I was using my C940 only for a week. I won't return it anyway because I don't have any better alternative.

I'll let you know when I get a response from the support.
