Re: Yoga C940 no charge w/ Thunderbolt3 Gen2

2019-12-29, 2:55 AM

Im not sure if this will help, but for the 730 models there is a very odd issue that unless you shine a light on the ambiant temp sensor, it wont accept any power delivery.

For those of you that still have the laptop + dock try it and let us know if it works. If it does, then that means its a software issue on Lenovo side.

Re: Yoga C940 no charge w/ Thunderbolt3 Gen2

2020-02-13, 12:42 PM

I see the exact same behavior on my new Yoga C940-14IIL with the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2. To troubleshoot the issue, I have ensured that both the Dock firmware update has been done and also the latest Thunderbolt driver Intel Thunderbolt Driver 1.41.648.5 05 Sep 2019 applied. I can confirm that when the docking station does not charge as expected when connected to the dock and the Thunderbolt connector closest to the USB port. However, when removed and connected to the Thunderbolt port closest to the headphone jack, the laptop charges normally.

I am not sure why the choice between Thunderbolt connector ports would result in different behavior, but at least this is one very quick and easy workaround.

If there is anyone from Lenovo that is interested in diagnosing this further, I am happy to supply more detailed diagnostics and Windows system information to help try and get a firmware/driver update authored.

same issue here.

had several calls/chats with Lenovo and ThinkPad support. some told me, combination it's not supported. Some told me, the combination is supported, but they directed me to the other support.

Dock is covered by ThinkPad support.

yoga is covered by Lenovo support.

as both supports are told me, that their product is functional. The webshop still shows this combination as the only and one supported, this is so frustrating!

Re:Yoga C940 no charge w/ Thunderbolt3 Gen2

I have had a Thinkpad since 2008 without any issues with it or Lenovo. Yesterday, I received my Yoga C940 15. Same issue as with others on the doc station recommended by Lenovo. May send the entire system back. However, was wondering if, in addition to setting up doc station as recommended, can a second travel charger be plugged into the pc power port and accomplish charging goal while connected to doc...without harming the pc. Anyone know???

Since the dock does not supply any power to the laptop due to Lenovo's failure to support Thunderbolt charging, the ONLY way to charge your laptop is by plugging a charger into the laptop while the dock is plugged into the Thunderbolt port. It will not damage the laptop.

I spent three entire days fighting with Lenovo sales and technical support to return my 15" Yoga for credit so I could buy the 14" version and they will not accept my return because it's after 30 days- in spite of arguing that I spent all that time trying to get charging to work. So, I am going to dump this one on ebay and buy a new HP. This is the last time I buy a Lenovo product.

Re:Yoga C940 no charge w/ Thunderbolt3 Gen2

Yoga c940 is currently not compatible with TB3 for external monitors.  Monitors do not light up when laptop comes out of sleep mode or is powered up.  Before purchasing both devices I received confirmation from Lenovo sales (in writing) that they are compatible, and TB3 is listed as only option for Yoga c940 on Lenovo site.  After several sessions with Lenovo support their tech tells me TB3 needs a firmware fix for Idea models, but no release is scheduled.

Considering Lenovo eliminated most ports on device, you must have a full featured dock for heavy users.

Oh, and the tech support helpfully pointed out that they have a fix for Thinkpads.
