Re:Yoga C940 no charge w/ Thunderbolt3 Gen2

On the charging issue, you should note the TB3 has two TB ports, one on back and one on front.  Only the one on the back (which has most of the ports) can be used for charging a laptop.   Why, I do not know.  You would think a product designer would configure the box so the laptop plugs in front and all the peripherals in back.  Anyone have a clue what their reasoning was?

HI

Could you please be so kind to inform if you keep using the Dock, and how the charging to the laptop have been performing?.

Thanks in advance!

I have the same problem my yoga. It seems the dock and a 135w power supply won't power the laptop through a single usb-c cable.

I would have to purchase additional items listed in this link

  1. 230w power supply.
  2. Thunderbolt split cable.
  3. Slim tip Y cable.

I think I'll just keep my laptop plugged in as well and not bother with purchasing all the additional things I would need.

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd500333 This shows a probable 1 cable docking solution - albeit somewhat bizarre and rather expensive. It seems that the C940 15" just cannot be charged by usb-c / thunderbolt power delivery alone. This is probably due to it's high power consumption, after all, the supplied charger delivers 135 W. Maximum PD power supplies are around 100 W, the highest I have seen are 112 W. Thunderbolt PD cables are limited to max. 100W. Intelligent power delivery management protocols prevent overheating/charging by switching off powering. The above solution provides a dual solution, with a primary power supply that is augmented by a lower wattage USB-C PD and Data connection. This hybrid solution (silly-ution?) meets the power requirements of both dock and laptop. I personally use a none powered Hama Dock and the provided charger for home use. Works like a dream - including hi-speed ethernet - and because it fits under my C940 15", it enhances cooling very significantly and does not clutter my desk. For travel, I use a small satechi dock and for charging a second 135 W power supply which is provided by Lenovo for small money.

Same issue - with the Lenovo Yoga C940 14"  I now have my power supply charging my machine while the Thunderbolt is also connected and plugged in for the purpose of using a larger monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse. But that's all we get for $269?? Not happy.

@Lorob1: So what is the solution? Return the C940 and get a Thinkpad?! Since then, have you heard about when/ if at all they're rolling out the firmware update? Is there any way to install the Thinkpad updates on the C940? Sigh.

This page would let you the drivers that need to be installed on your device.

https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/downloads/ds505148

I hope this helps!

Just put in your laptop make and model and you are good to go.

Download the driver and install it.

Your problem would be gone.

I bought a Caldigit TS3+ last week and I'm not being able to connect to my Lenovo C940 14" UHD without having issues. If I don't plug the laptop charger, the dock starts to reboot every 5 seconds.

Had you experienced any problem with this dock?

I was able to get this to work.

Yoga 940 15" and Thinkpad Doc Gen 2 and 230W power adapter that came with the dock

Plug the 230W power adapter into the 135W plug (not the 230w port) on the rear of the dock.

Plug your laptop power cable into the laptop (this basically requires both plugs to work, but I have a spare power so I don't mind).

Use the 2 in one power adapter they sent plugging the USB-C plug only into your laptop USB-C port leaving the power plug that is connected to it loose and the other end into the port via the dual jack adapter that came with it.

Everything works, laptop charges, etc.
