Yoga Pro 2 Volume Changing Issues

2013-12-23, 22:35 PM

Hi all,

I tried to do a search for related volume issues but haven't seen anything like this yet.

I've had my Yoga for almost 2 months now and I've noticed in the last couple weeks the volume changes randomly. I will put on a video and volume will be low (even though it's maxed out) and then a few seconds or minutes in, the volume will suddenly "turn on" and become max like it should be.  The volume panel doesn't come up on the screen or anything, it's just the volume literally turns up.   This happens at the beginning of playing sounds, in the middle, at the end, it's completely random.

Anyone know what could be causing the volume to just randomly turn up?

Same issue here, sound seems distant then suddenly gets loud with no change in the volume 'level'. Please respond Lenovo.

edit: its almost like a sleep mode for the volume (perhaps for an app that controls it? dolby stuff? realtek?) because once it 'turns on' it stays loud until you stop making sound for a while, then it goes back to "sleep"

I'm having this exact same problem, do you guys know what the problem is now?

When watching youtube videos, sometimes the sound is low for a few seconds then suddenly it goes back to the normal volume. Skype is acting weird too, sometimes its quiet, and sometimes its normal volume, but Skype doesn't revert volumes during the call like youtube does.

At first I thought it was the setting in the sound menu that adjusts the volume of different sounds when you are using PC to place or receive phone calls, but I have set that to "Do nothing", but it still hasn't solved my problem.

The volume level in the sound properties never changes. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? It is really annoying since this is brand new laptop and has more problems than my old laptop from 2008.

If you need anymore details, just tell me what you need. I am on Yoga 2 Pro 256GB i5-4200U 8GB RAM with Windows 8.1 stock.

Thanks in advance

I *might* have figured it out. Go to C:/Program Files/Dolby Digital Plus and run the ddpe.exe file. This will open dolby's interface which I have NEVER seen as accessible on the computer before this. Disable volume leveler. Honestly don't know if it fixed it yet, just saw the option and it clicked.

edit: noticed that was only one section. i just clicked the power button in the top left to disable the whole thing.

Hmmmm yea I see it. I wonder why we can't access that program otherwise. Turning it off by pressing the power button on the top left instantly made my music sound better. Not sure yet if it will fix all the problems permanently, but its a start and we'll just have to see if it works for everything else, Youtube, Skype, and all.

Hopefully it does provide a permanent fix. Thanks for that!

So an update on that fix, turning it off makes my Skype calls very quiet, but my other sounds are normal.... so I guess there is still some tinkering to do to figure this out. For now I just put a shortcut on my desktop to it and will turn it on when I'm on a Skype call I guess.

So another observation I just made, I think this Dolby Digital Plus thing only works for one device at a time.

It's always the first thing that is playing that receives the good quality sound, and whatever you open after that will sound quiet and muffled when Dolby Digital Plus is on. If you have two things playing at the same time, and close the one that is getting the good quality sound, then the other one will suddenly get better sound.

But the sound isn't great for anything if Dolby Digital Plus is just turned off completely. Just need to get it working for multiple inputs at the same time somehow...

Ok hopefully final update.

Since the Yoga 2 13 (non-Pro version) just came out today, I finally was able to find their drivers on their support website, and updated my Realtek audio driver to the Yoga 2 13 version 6.0.1.7154.

So far it seems like the Dolby Digital Plus can finally support more than one input at a time, all my volumes are equal now as far as I can see. Hopefully this will be a permanent fix.

Here is the link to the updated driver:

Update:

So it seems to work for 2 inputs at least now, but not 3. Good enough.

Good keeping up! I wonder if there are any other drivers from the yoga 2 13 worth using... I can't get to the full driver page it won't load past the selector.
