Yoga Slim 7: BIOS update to DMCN34WW breaks the option "Secure Boot = No"

2020-10-27, 21:35 PM

It's not a big issue for me, just if anybody hits the same issue.

I have laptop Yoga Slim 7-14ARE05 with Ryzen 4700U (model 82A2000HCK). A few days ago I updated BIOS to a new version DMCN34WW (from 22 Oct 2020) and since then I'm not able to boot a custom Linux kernel 5.9 in my distro Ubuntu 20.10.
The distro contains official stable kernel 5.8.0 which doesn't require non-secure boot (it's signed). However I need kernel 5.9.x because of an issue with display's backlight. How to install new kernel is here.
As the installed kernel 5.9.x is unsigned, secure booting must be disabled in BIOS at first.
Unfortunately booting in the mode "Secure Boot = No" stopped working with the last BIOS version. During boot I'm getting the message "Loading initramfs" (or something like that) and then booting freezes.

Solution: I had to downgrade BIOS back to the previous version DMCN32WW where booting in non-secure mode works well.

Yoga Slim 7: BIOS update to DMCN34WW breaks the option "Secure Boot = No"

Hello Mirao, From your ticket I understand that you can boot Yoga Slim 7 from USB. How you do that? Since I can't boot Slim 7 from USB. Best, Ali

It may help you to get useful answers if you provide more information.  What is on the USB drive you're trying to boot?  How was it prepared?  Is it UEFI-bootable? etc...

Hello nali123, I think I didn't do anything special.

Press F12 (or Fn + F12) when laptop is powered on and select USB (a flash disk must be inserted into port USB Type-A).

I'm able to boot live distro Ubuntu 20.04 and also Windows 10 (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Ubuntu/Ideapad-5-15ARE05-BIOS-update-on-Linux/m-p/5025157?page=1#5170547)

Hello @spidey101

Will Lenovo fix their firmware?

UEFI dual boot is also broken since akcn38ww on the S940 for example.
I opened a ticket for this and the support guys didn't even try to understand the issue.
And also refused ( or were not allowed ) to provide instructions on how to get older BIOS versions.

Thanks

Yes, getting of older BIOS seems to be a challenge because it's not archived anywhere or am I wrong?

Fortunately I had it downloaded when upgraded previously.

32 is still on the server and may help as the OP posted.  Modify the current link appropriately.

I'm not suggesting this, don't know if it will roll back successfully, or break something else if it does.  Just telling you that it's there... or was a few minutes ago...
