Welcome to the Community Forums.
Before deciding on replacing the battery, you can check the battery report.
While the laptop is turned off, with the battery indicator blicking amber, connect your charger for 3-4 hours without powering it. The battery led is expected to change from amber to blinking white.
I hope this helps answer your query.
Update us how it goes.

Thanks. Have run a battery report (attached). Not sure what I'm looking at but latest data seems to look a bit odd. Battery is currently showing as 0% and plugged in, charging although charging doesn't seem to be having any impact

Seems your machine is a Yoga 3 pro model 80HE.
It is odd looking at the report showing that just June 20 it stops using the battery. So if you can check on the events that day (perhaps Windows Update history or Event Viewer) we can check on what caused it to stop suddenly.
For now, observe the right side for the battery indicator (page 11) and have it plugged in for 3-4 hours if you have the time right now to do it. We would be doing an operational charging (page 19) but best to just keep it off while plugged in.

Have left it plugged in but switched off for a few hours and still showing 0% charged. Amber light is flashing but relatively slowly. In terms of updates it looks like there was activity on 17th and then again on 21st. From memory I did not use the machine at all on 20th June

With how we did the operational charging test, on the machine level the battery still fails to charge.
I would suggest to have it checked to confirm battery failure if needing replacement battery.
Usually if the service center have same Lenovo model then swapping batteries would certainly guarantee the point of failure.
