Re: Yoga touchscreen not working...

2012-11-04, 6:12 AM

OK, after playing with msconfig and many restarts I think I have this touchscreen disappearing problem understood for my situation (may not apply to everyone):

Symptom: Touchscreen functionality stops working, usually after restart.  Going into the Desktop shortly after restart shows a notification in the lower right that a recent USB device isn't working.  Going into the Device Manager shows a failed USB device (Invalid Device  Descriptor, location Port_#0005.Hub_#0005)

Short-term fix: Hard reboot (hold down power button for 10 sec so the next restart shows the F2/F12 boot options, or use the Novo button to select Normal Boot - thanks Andy1990zx).  Sometimes it's necessary to hard reboot two or three times before the problem goes away (or comes back), making it more difficult to understand what fix works.

WHAT WORKED FOR ME - Disable the BTDevManager service: Windows-R, run msconfig, check Selective startup, in Services tab uncheck (disable) BTDevManager.  Then hard reboot (up to 3 times) until touchscreen functionality comes back.  This fix seems stable for me and I haven't seen the problem or failed USB device resurface since and after mutiple restarts.  I also tested re-enabling the service and the touchscreen would soon stop working again after a few restarts.

Another, simpler way to accomplish this workaround is probably just to go into View Local Services, right-click on BTDevManager and select Properties, change Startup Type to Disabled, OK, then hard reboot until the touchscreen works again.

I don't know what turning off this service means... I do still have working Bluetooth and was still able to pair my iPhone.  I'm just glad the touchscreen stays working (so far!).

I have submitted the very useful and detailed information to internal, thanks for your trying Mikey. Others could also apply to Mikey's solution to see if the workaround works.

I have returned the first laptop, and exchanged for a new unit at Best Buy. They were nice and allowed the exchange.

Once I got home, I plugged in a USB receiver for a Logitech wireless mouse. Then I power on the machine for the first time. Well, same problem. The machine came out of the box with a non-responsive screen! This leads me to believe somehow using the USB2.0 port with the Logitech transmitter may have caused this. I unplugged it, then I used the power-button-10-secs method, and it works.

It looks like a general issue now. There is a certain weakness with this laptop that will render the touchscreen interface unstable. On the other hand, everything else with this machine is so pleasant, I'll hold on to this second machine and hope Lenovo tech team can come up with a fix.

I'll join this party as well.  Same issue with the touch just stop working for no reason.  Lenovo tech support was unable to resolve it and suggested I call Microsoft or return the unit for a replacement.  The tech from Microsoft seems to think it's the "Intelligent Touchpad" software being used that is causing the problem.  If you go to the Lenovo Yoga drivers page and try and download the drivers it gives an error saying it's not compatible.  Wondering why Lenovo just isn't using "Synaptics" touch?  They are already using them for the mouse drivers.  In fact, it looks like the synaptics touch drivers got packaged with the mouse drivers just aren't enabled and I can't seem to find a way to enable them.  Lenovo better come up with a fix soon or they will be getting all their Yoga's returned.

Update:  I did the recommended setting for USB port for the screen (don't let device shut down power) and removed my paired BT device.  haven't seen the touch screen go out in 5 days.  Still seeing random wireless card settings but less of an issue.  Q - is there a keystroke combo to turn wireless adaptor on/off?

You can use the Airplane mode button (F7) to toggle it off and back on.

Nice suggestion!  Disabling the BtDevManager did the trick for me... both with the Touch Screen not responding to gestures and with the intermittent Wi-Fi problems I was experiencing.  I didn't even hard boot the device - a soft restart and all is well.  I've been working all day now without an issue on the Touch Screen and have been sleeping/waking the device without any issues reconnecting to my office's Wi-Fi.

Whew..!  I thought I was going to have to return this device, which is absolutely a joy to work with, other than the problem discussed on this forum.

How do you disable the BtDevManager? And what does the BtDevManager do? Thanks
