best wifi card to replace troublesome Realtek card

My yoga 730 continues to have dropout problems despite any software fixes I have tried so I'm just going to replace the Realtek card.

Any recommendations?  Budget friendly vs more expensive cards?

Re: best wifi card to replace troublesome Realtek card

Find the hardware maintenance manual for your model. Look for WiFi cards in the parts section. Each part has an FRU. WIFI FRUs are hardcoded in the BIOS so a generic card with no FRU or different FRU won't work on your machine even though it has the same chipset. Google each WIFI FRU you find in the WiFi FRU list to see what chipset it has (you can usually tell by the name of the part) and my advice would be to pick a 2x2 Intel card and use the latest Intel drivers from Intel's website. I strongly suggest you don't even try to install Lenovo drivers as they are usually much older than the ones you find on Intel's website and Intel has fixed dozens on issues in each subsequent release. I've gone this route on all Lenovo laptops I owned for the past 12 years, from T60p onwards and always had much better wifi speed and stable connectivity than with the Qualcomm, Atheros, Broadcomm or Realtek cards. Ocasionally, some of  Intel's drivers were really buggy (see 7260 cards) but they fixed them in a span of 2-3 month. Lenovo almost never bothers to update their drivers so if the version posted was a buggy one, you're stuck with those bugs for no good reason as most drivers are just repackaged Intel drivers anyway. Same goes for integrated Intel video cards, chipset drivers, and so on. Use the latest Intel drivers where possible.

Re: best wifi card to replace troublesome Realtek card

Hi jkmail,

Greetings.

OEM would have whitelist of parts which usually on the FRU list of the hardware manual. This may not be listed if your machine is for YOGA 730-13IKB but instead you can use the parts lookup page.

Under Commodity list -Wireless LAN adapter would be the card available for your system. Example is MTM 81CT0008US showing PN 01AX704 Wireless,CMB,IN,8265 NV M2 Intel card.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Regards
