9i weak wi-fi signal

2020-12-21, 22:33 PM

I got a Yoga 9i (Mica version) on Friday 18 and I am bothered by the weak wi-fi signal. At my room, all my devices get 100% signal, cellphone, tablet, kindle, and also my previous 7 years old laptop, but the new Yoga i9 is getting between 25-75% (it is also quite unstable). Its not only my internet signal, my neighbors signal (more than one) are also captured by all my devices but the i9 struggles to pick the signals. I run speed tests and the issue indeed translates into a much lower internet speed on the i9.

So, full disclosure, I bought it from Best Buy ,and it was a certified open box. I naturally thought it was an issue of the particular device I got and so I went to best buy to talk to the support team there. Well, in the store, as I passed by the laptops displayed for sale I saw the 9i Black version and stopped to check it. It turns out the internet connection on it was weak as well! I checked several laptops around (including an Yoga 7i) and they were capturing the store signal (and several other signals) at full strength, but the Black 9i was capturing the store signal at 75% only and the others more distant signals at less then 50% (2 `bars` including the dot), moreover I ran speed tests on the laptops and the 9i was really lacking in comparison to the other laptops around (again, Yoga 7i included).  So that is either a tremendous coincidence or the issue is more widespread than I first thought, but I couldn't find anyone talking about it so I don`t know how to try to fix it or if I can expect some fix. I tried all the first recommendations: Check for updates, use Lenovo Vantage...with no success.

Isn`t there anyone facing the same issue? Addressed it somehow?

I really like the 9i and would like to keep it, but sometimes when loading a video or something I can feel the difference and having to live with that on a premium laptop would be hard.

Also, I think that because of the weak signal when I turn on the laptop it takes some time for it to connect to the internet, I open the browser and see 'No internet' and have to wait a couple of seconds for it to connect.

Thanks for the attention

Re:9i weak wi-fi signal

Your 9i has the newer Intel WiFi 6 AX201 wireless card, and WiFi 6 has a shorter range than WiFi 5 just like WiFi 5 has a shorter range than WiFi 2.4.    The reason is due to the frequency used to communicate on WiFi  at 6GHz (802.11ax) vs other devices connected at 5GHz (802.11ac) or 2.4Ghz (802.11bgn).

That said, even though your wireless signal strength is slightly weaker, you should be able to connect at a decent speed, but if you can force the card to use the 5GHz band using the AX201s Advanced settings, and that is something I would at least try to see if it helps resolve your issue.

How to access the advanced adapter settings in Windows® 10

  1. Right-click Start in the bottom left corner.
  2. Click Device Manager.
  3. Click the > sign to expand the Network adapters entry.
  4. Right-click the wireless adapter (the AX201 in your case) and click Properties.
  5. Click the Advanced tab to configure the advanced settings.
  6. Scroll down the advanced settings until you see 802.11n/ac/ax Wireless Mode or HT Mode and change it from 802.11ax to 802.11ac
  7. Once set, close Device Manager and reboot to test.

For more information on the Advance Settings, see this document from Intel Advanced Intel® Wireless Adapter Settings

Cheers,

Thank you for the reply! I didnt know about this range ladders thing. I changed 802.11ax to 802.11ac, also tried the 802.11n (for 2GH). Could not notice much change in neither type of connection. For clarification, the 5G speed is quite decent  at my room (although  the signal strength is 50%), but I was worried about the 2G (I travel, it is more common), and this is where I really feel a difference. And again, I tested a 7i model that was receiving the same signals and was by the side of the 9i, and there was a significant difference on their signal reception and connection speed, and I think both use the same wireless card. I will test the connection at my workplace and other places this week.

Thanks for the help anyways!

Re:9i weak wi-fi signal

2020-12-22, 18:52 PM

I just received the Shadow Black 9i yesterday, and I am having exactly the same wifi experience.  I use an Eero mesh network.  I don't have a node in my office, but my Macbook and iPhone are both getting 5 bars connectivity and seeing download speeds of between 150 and 200 mbps, and around 20 up on our cable internet.  The 9i sometimes gets no connection at all, and when it does it's pretty pathetic - a max of 25mbps down (but more typically around 10) and just 1 up.  It is located right next to my Macbook and phone.  If I take the 9i out of the room and place it close to the main router hub or one of the nodes, the speeds are much better, so it seems that its range is really poor.  I have tried disabling the ax mode, indicating a preference for the 5ghz band, etc but none of that has made any appreciable difference.

Is this a hardware or software issue?  I may have to return this device if we can't figure this out.  The wifi is just unacceptable for a high-end laptop.  Frankly even for a $150 chromebook.

Hey guys,

I have exactly the same problem with my Yoga 9i. Weak - or no - connection via. Wifi with the AX201 chip.

I already created a support Ticket and will keep you up to date.

I just spoke to Lenovo support about this same issue. There is a WLAN driver update - Intel_Wlan_21.110.1.1_phwfw01690PIE - that he installed and now my range is fine. It's available on the Lenovo support website.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I looked it up and I had it installed on my laptop already, still experiencing the issue.

Likewise.  I spent an hour on a call with Lenovo tech who ran a couple of pings and declared that everything was fine. It is not.  I will have to return the device.  What a shame.

Same wifi problems as the C940 that Lenovo never bothered to fix. Just rolled on to the new model. Not surprising at all.

The support is now going to replace my wifi chip.

Hopefully they don´t use the AX201 again, because I think this isn´t a hardware problem. After some research, I found out that DELL & HP have the same issues with this kind of chip..
