Thanks a lot for the guide! It looks rather simple and I'll give it a try.

Only, did anybody manage to clarify what the 3 guilty screws are meant for? I'm afraid that the laptop's structure might become less sturdy or even have something moving inside during transport

Have anybody replaced the screws with plastic ones. I think it could solve the WiFi and body integrity as well.

If you find fitting plastic screws please let me know, I'd like to do the same.

Hi...We just need to know the screw size...but I don't want to unasemble my laptop untill I have the whole solution. There are plenty of plastic (nylon) screws on alibaba/aliexpress. Maybe another member in the forum have the size info in metric system.

Re:9i weak wi-fi signal

2021-04-08, 16:13 PM

I just tried removing the screws-- with the all off, I get ALL THE BARS, on BOTH BANDS.  But with the 6 torx screws back in, signal drops off somewhat-- about 2/3 strength on 2.4GHz, and down to 1/5 on 5GHz. So I put all the screws back, and something felt slightly different-- now I'm up to about 2/3 strength on 2.4Ghz, and about 1/3 on 5GHz.  But throughput is still not great.

the HMM at https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/yoga_9_14itl5_hmm.pdf

shows the 3 screws under the hinge-bumper on page 29 (marked "2"-- the three in the middle)

and lists them as M1.6 x L2.9 on page 30.

I measured them with a cheap micrometer, and confirmed similar measurements

dk=3.10mm

k=~0.15mm

l=2.90mm

d=~1.5mm

(and something like 7 threads in 2.9mm, more or less)

(using the same measurements as the wafer-head diagram at https://www.laptopscrews.com/Sizing.htm, pasted below)

If the wireless hardware works, with the cover partially/fully removed, then the problem is 100% Lenovo's defective case-design. Gaslighting us to act like it's a driver issue is NOT okay.

Re:9i weak wi-fi signal

Unsure if this is substantiated fact due to our very short observation, but we bought the Lenovo Yoga 9i a few days ago and replaced the bundled NVME storage with a XPG GAMMIX S50 Lite 2TB M.2 2280 PCIe (AGAMMIXS50L-2T-C). The Wifi was pretty low 1-2 bars before the M.2 NVME upgrade. The XPG M.2 NVME was rather thick and had a metal heat shield that push right against the base or bottom cover of the Yoga 9i. We now  have better Wifi reception 2-3 bars at the same location where we used to get 1-2 bars. Again, this is a quick observation from swapping out the storage.

We did see a small black plastic piece that fell out of the laptop and did not know what it was until we read this thread and recognized that it was part of the washer for the three Phillip screws.

We did use Loctite 242 on the torx screws, but not on the three Phillip screws since we started with the Phillip screws and forgot about the Loctite.

Any feedback or anyone is able to test/find more information on this would be useful since our other laptops are getting the full 4 bars (the center dot is considered to be one bar) in the same location.

Hopefully, sharing this would be helpful for others.

Re:9i weak wi-fi signal

Ugh. I have exactly the same issue. Bought my yoga 9i in February and have been dealing with this problem for the last couple of months.

I have to be literally 2 meters from my router to get decent signal...otherwise impossible.

About 1 month ago I spoke with lenovo customer service and they said everything seemed fine, but clearly now that I read this, there seems to be a manufacturing problem with this PC....

Very very very dissatisfied with my purchase at this time....had a Thinkpad that I liked, but now I want my money back,
