Re: yoga 13 wifi issues

2012-12-03, 3:13 AM

Two days ago I proposed that possibly there is an adaptive strategy in the WiFi driver that throttles the connection during periods of weak signal or interference (running the microwave in my case).  And once throttled, instead of adapting back to the high speeds, it remains stuck at a consistent low throttled speed.

With some more tests, this is very consistent on my Yoga 13.  I can reliably return to high speed with a "system restore" to a time when the WiFi speed was high, or reinstall the WiFi drivers.  And interfering WiFi with the microwave while downloading consistently triggers the low speed (which then remains).

I have not heard is if this is being experienced by others.  It could be just my machine, or I could have uncovered the root cause of the problems people on this thread are having.  Please mention it if this fits with your experience.  I would like a little confirmation before taking it to Lenovo directly.  Thanks.

Re: yoga 13 wifi issues

I have the no Wi-Fi after suspend issue both at my home and at son's house so not the router. I tried the Oct 23 drivers still no help. Running the troubleshooter does work and says it turned on auto connect that was already on. So I tried disconnecting and then reconnecting without checking auto connect. Now on a boot I have to connect by hand but after suspend it stays connected so far. Since I have suspend set as the action when closing the lid I have many more suspends than boots. Has worked for 24 hours so far but problem has been on and off, better and worse so I’ll have to wait and see. Either way Lenovo needs to fix this.

Well, let me join in. I just Googled "weak wifi Lenovo Yoga" and found this forum.

My Yoga is experiencing similar problems. I purchased it on 11/10/12. I'm not a techie. My old Viao had no problems with my WiFi set up, but this Yoga does. Just walk away from the router upstairs or the access point down cellar and the signal drops like a stone. Speeds come to a crawl and every few minutes the signal is lost. Sheesh!

So, I'm hoping Lenovo comes up with something better than the Power Management solution posted that did nothing for me.

BTW, my wife's all-in-one Lenova does just fine wireless. Strong signal all the time and her computer is alwasy a floor up or a floor down from the router or access point.

I don't believe this issue is solved, despite the post. Is this still being investigated?

I sure hope so. I only have a few  days to return it. No solution. Back it goes. Too bad. Nice unit.

It's definitely not solved... just marked so by the original poster. Some people found a fix with the new driver, but it's so inconsistent, there is no 100% solution.

Only thing we have is hope for Lenovo/Realtek to release a new driver. ...and yes, I believe it is software related.

Help! I am now completely unable to connect to the Internet from my Yoga 13 so am sending this from an iPhone.
I have updated the driver to the most recent 10/23/2012 and followed all of the other suggested fixes on this board.
When I click connect (and keep the Network connections window open to see the progress) the wifi goes from 'not connected' to 'disabled' to 'attempting to authenticate' and then just hangs at attempting to authenticate, never actually connecting.
I love my Yoga but it is useless without wifi so Lenovo, please help!

kbwalsh - I had a similar issue because I kept futzing around with my router. I had to go do a Forget this Network, reboot and then try to connect to it again. Not sure if this helps or not.

Re: yoga 13 wifi issues

So I installed inSSIDer on both my SONY Vaio laptop and my Yoga.  With both computers on my desk right next to the wireless router, the signal strength runs about -34 on the Sony and -58 on the Yoga. No matter how close I put the Yoga to the router the signal is no better than -45, although the Sony can do -15. My basement access point is at -61 on the Sony and -71 on the Yoga, two floors down.

As I walk out of the room with the router the Sony drops to -46, and the Yoga at -70, and there is still line of sight.

Maybe someone has more knowledge than I do to controvert these numbers, but this seems to be pretty strong evidence that something is wrong with the Yoga.

Can someone from Lenovo reply and fill us in as to whether this is being investigated?
