That would depend on how "hot" you are referring to. It is normal for the battery to get warm while charging, but it should not get extremely hot, as in too hot to be uncomfortable to touch. Are your case fans working and all the vents clean an not obstructed?

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.
On battery, laptops usually run in a lower power configuration. Underlock the CPU, slow down the fans, turn down the screen brightness...all to preserve battery power.
Plugged in, there is no need for that, and everything runs at full speed. Hence, more heat.
