yoga 920 wifi drops intermittently

2019-07-20, 18:58 PM

Have a Yoga 920 which is definitely out of warranty.  That said, two or five times a day, my wifi drops, indicating that no wifi connections are available.  I have a dual band router and USUALLY within 30 second or more, the connection is re-established.  Sometimes it connects to the 5.0 mh, sometimes switches connections to the 2.4.  I am fairly convinced that it is the laptop problem rather than my router, since during the outage, the indication is that "no connections are available" and i usually have 2 or three neighbors who show up on the list, including a access point provided by my cable provider.  the fact that it cannot see any of these leads me to believe it is the laptop

I have run Lenovo hardware scans and it has found no hardware problems.  I have updated the wifi driver, and this has not resolved it.  roaming aggressiveness is set to Medium (3).

because it happens intermittently, i am not sure how to demonstrate this.  Would best guess be to replace the wifi card?  and if i were to purchase a new one, is this a soldered connection, or if i open up the bottom of the laptop, is it pretty much plug and play?  when it is working there is no problem at all, and the outage only lasts, as indicated for less than a minute and comes back.

I am line of sight of the router and less than 15 feet, aso by all indication obtain a good strong wifi signal.

Do you know what Wireless LAN (WiFi) Adapter your laptop has currently?

  • Right-click Start and select Device Manager
  • Left-click on the > sign to expand the Network Adapters Section
  • Look for the one that says "Wireless LAN", right-click on it and select "Properties" and the select the Drives Tab.

What is the Name and Driver version listed for your Wireless card?

If you system is running Windows 10's latest June 1903 release, and it has the Qualcom Wireless adapter, then you are may be running into a known issue with Qualcom and Windows 10 1903 (see below).

Lenovo tech updated my driver couple weeks ago via remote connection. It is Qualcomm QCA 61x4A Wireless network adapter version 12.0.0.714 dated 6/24/2018 though under events tab, it indicates that the device was installed on 7/12/2019.

(Driver Management concluded the process to install driver netathr10x.inf_amd64_e42ba1b14364d569 for Device Instance ID PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_003E&SUBSYS_082717AA&REV_32\4&2733D3EC&0&00E4 with the following status: 0x0)

I am indeed running version 1903, but this problem has been going prior to the 1903 install.

if this is not the most current driver could you point me to where I might be able to update it? I had not really questioned it since it was updated by Lenovo folks.

and if this is a known issue, is there a known workaround :-) or just something that needs to be lived with until there is a fix? :-(

Lenovo has a newer driver (version 12.0.0.832 dated 12 Jun 2019) posted for the Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4/QCA9377 Wireless Network Adapters.     I seems that Lenovo ony posted it  for its Thinkpad E seriies laptops, but hopefully it will solve the problem with your Yoga's WiFi.

Thanks for the direction. I have just installed new driver and will come back and update as a fix in a couple of days if indeed it has fixed the situation.

It has been three days now without the wifi signal dropping, so at this point, I assume it has been solved. Thanks again.

whereas i had updated the driver per forum suggestion, for a number of days, i did not have a wifi drop.  recently it has started up again, and the event logs are displaying the following error:

Miniport Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4A Wireless Network Adapter, {9a85e688-1bce-489d-a96a-11eb5f509000}, had event Fatal error: The miniport has detected an internal error

does this lead me to assume i have a faulty adapter and if so can you tell me if this is a piece that can be purchased and replaced by non-tech user?  that is to say i am not without some capability, but if replacing it requires soldering or tearing apart the entire laptop, then this is probably beyond my capability
