yoga 920 with external gpu

2017-10-25, 18:24 PM

Hi,

It has processor i7 8850u that support up to 12 Pci express (1x4, 2x2, 1x2+2x1 and 4x1)

It also has ssd Pci based

It has thunderbolt 3 port

Qeustion is: I want to connect external gpu for games/design (for example Akitio node with geforce 1080, or another one) via thunderbolt 3 port.

Is it will be work?

How many pci lines it will be use?  (Graphic card can use up x16, but processor support only 1x4, but if ssd connected via pci too, so we have second position -> 2x2 -> so it will be only 1x2 for graphic card and 1x2 for ssd?)

thx!

I believe it is only two lanes, but perhaps someone can confirm.

Thank you!

but in spec on lenovo about 920 yoga -

2 USB C (Thunderbolt, PD, DP, USB 3.1 full-function)

and DP is (Double Port) version that uses a PCIe 3.0 ×4 link to provide two Thunderbolt 3 ports (DSL6540)

so it means that it provide me two thunderbolt port with PCI x 4?

and i saw that your notebook is yoga 720
it has i7-7700HQ (1x16, 1x8 2x4) - so it means that he also not work 1x16 because you also has pci based ssd. Am I right? Thx!

Here is a video on the 720, with the comments from the author:

"ERRATA : So as it turns out there really are only two PCIe lanes on this machine for Thunderbolt output. Using HWInfo as some viewers suggested I do yields the speed of the bus itself vs. what the capacity of the enclosure is. But this GPU, the 1070, seems to perform the same whether it's on a 2x or 4x connection. So for the moment the 4x may not be as important for low to mid-range GPUs."

I am not sure if the 920 has any more lanes.  Sorry.  Maybe this info will help you.

I've been in communication with Akitio (they have great customer support!) and they said only ONE Thunderbolt 3 (TB3) port is required to run an eGPU, as with most units on the market. It's best if it's a 4-lane.

One reason I cancelled my order for a Dell XPS 13 from Costco is it only has one TB3 port which is 2-lane. I believe Dell did this so it wouldn't overshadow sales of their gaming laptops. Whereas the Yoga 920 has two TB3 ports which are 4-lane, plus the UHD screen. Both have the 8th generation Intel Quad core which is sweet. What the Dell has over the Yoga 920 is the compactness for plane flights.

But who wants to game with a 14" screen? The beauty of the TB3 port is you can hook up a gaming card and larger monitor to the port and basically use the Quad core in the Yoga as your CPU.

I also considered dropping big bucks (finally), for a MacBook Pro, which also has two TB3 ports and 4-lanes, but with those, you can only run an AMD-based graphics card. Besides the fact that, compared to the Yoga, it has an outdated CPU and lower definition screen, albeit quite nice.

The Akito and Asus look great, but have no ethernet LAN port. Can anyone suggest an eGPU that works with the Yoga 920 (8th gen i7, 16RAM) that includes an RJ45 connector? I'm interested in some gaming.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is works great. (i7 8 generation, 16gb)

But:

I was inserted into my akitio - geforce 1080 ti 11G, and it was worked not good because of power supply. So I changed power supply to 600Watt of Corsair SFX and no problem!

I bought an HP Omen Accelerator Shell. It comes complete with power supply, ports for a GPU AND an extra hard drive, an ethernet port, and it powers the computer. Also got an NVIDIA EVGA 1060 with 6 GB RAM.

Plugged it into my 920 with 8th gen i7 and it works great!
