I bought a usb (type C)- to HDMI cord so I can use my other monitors. When I select "project - extend" (or anything but pc only) from the F10 dropdown, nothing happens. I have tried several monitors, including a projection monitor, so it's probably not the monitor. I tried a different cable and still nothing. I have used other devices in the usb type C port and they work fine. Also, notably, there is no chime associated with the attachment of the external monitor. I even went to the Geek Squad and they were stumped. Anyone have an idea what to try next?

The most obvious suggestion is to try a genuine Lenovo USB-C to HDMI Adapter Cable. If that doesn't work than there's an issue with the Y900s itself.
Also FWIW I use a USB-C to HDMI CableCreation Type C to HDMI 4K Hub Adapter with my Y900s and an external ThinkVision 1900x1200 monitor. Other non-Lenovo adapters that I tried didn't work.

Rats. I bought the Lenovo adapter, a new HDMI cable and new monitor. It chimes now when plugged in, and the monitor recognizes the cable too. But there is no video input. It almost seems as if this W10 feature has been disabled.

1. Windows Start -> Settings -> System -> Display, scroll down to Multiple displays.Try Detect.
2. Right-click on the Desktop and select Intel Graphics Settings.
Do either of those work?
