Fedora 29 cannot install P72 (w P2000 graphics)

When I pop in the installer, I get startX fails.

I did a NetInstall, but when I tried to startX, it failed again.

I updated and I can do most everything with the command line, but no GUI.

if I wanted to use a terminal only, I would time machine myself back to the 80's when I was thin, young and using CPM.

I know somebody here, much smarter than I, has installed Fedora 29 on their P72, please advise.

Oh, and I asked on the AskFedora forums and got nothing.

Please help, using Windows is killing me, but sadly, it's the only thing working!

Sorry that I can't help with Fedora - but I can assure you that you don't need Windows. Ubuntu is running fine on the P72 - I'm just typing this text an a P72 running Kubuntu that was installed with a graphical installer Smiley Happy

Re: Fedora 29 cannot install P72 (w P2000 graphics)

I actually ended installing Pop!_OS, by System76.

It's based on Ubuntu 18.10 and comes with a Nvidea driver, and it's really smooth.

The name is a little ridiculous, but the distro is very solid.

Still, I'd like to give Fedora a try, so if anyone has a Fedora answer, lemme know!

If you have POP!_OS running, then check what propietary nvidia driver is installed and try to find and install it on fedora.

This Fedora 29/28/27 nVidia Drivers Install Guide might help.

Before installing Fedora did you change the BIOS Display settings to Discreet,  I also had to use a mouse as the button pointer and  touch pad did not work during install.  Once installed and I did a dnf update the external mouse was no longer required.  It may also work if you add psmouse.proto=imps to the kernel command line of the installer.  Yoiu will need to update the vidio driver to the one from NVIDIA  release 390 or higher before switching the BIOS back to hybrid display mode

Re: Fedora 29 cannot install P72 (w P2000 graphics)

Thanks for chiming in, I really appreciate it!

I had the BIOS Display set to Hybrid, but I will try with DISCREET.

I have an external mouse, so pointing isn't an issue. It's the Black Screen of Misery that stops all the installation fun.

Would you suggest I start the Install in Basic Graphics Mode?

I have told to replace

nouveau.nomodeset=0

with

nouveau.modeset=0

Do you think that is a good idea?

As for the trackpad, I am glad than DNF update solves the issue. On Ubuntu/Pop_OS! I have had to run this command

sudo sh -c 'echo -n "elantech"> /sys/bus/serio/devices/serio1/protocol'

..and the trackpad works for the session.

But for now, I would like to INSTALL FEDORA 29, and get this party started!

I did not have any issues in Graphical install mode and did not have to set anything other than the BIOS display setting

Ok, then I'll just change the BIOS settings and try to install and see where it gets me.

I'll take notes on my install and post my results.

Re: Fedora 29 cannot install P72 (w P2000 graphics)

1) booted into Windows.

2) Went to Recovery Mode, and selected "Change UEFI settings"

3) Reboot into BIOS.
4) Changed display settings from Hybrid to DISCREET.

5) rebooted.

6) Installed Fedora

I'll be honest, my jaw hit the floor when the graphical installer launched.

I installed the NVIDIA driver and I am writing this on my Fedora 29 powered Lenovo P72 powerhouse.

Thanks for your support!

P.S. The trackpad works fine.
