Linux/Ubuntu on Ideapad 330s 15ARR

Hi everyone,
I would like to know if this laptop is compatible with Ubuntu, and if yes what version and what steps are required, because I've read that the installation of this OS could bug the UEFI/BIOS and make it not save the changes. Is it real? And should I update the bios before installing linux?
Thanks in advance to all!

The only issue with Linux Mint 19 or Ubuntu 18.04 that I know of is that it needs a kernel patch for touchpad support

Re: Linux/Ubuntu on Ideapad 330s 15ARR

I installed Kubuntu 18.04 on our 330S without any issues. The wifi driver kept on returning a 6Mbit/s and there were/are error messages in dmesg related to the wifi adapter but after quite some back and forth this turned out to be a false flag.

If the OS reports back 6MBit/s no matter what, do an actual test. In our case actual throughput was significanlty higher.

Thanks @Toz for confirmation!!
I will try kubuntu..

Did you try any other gnome flavor?
Did you require any specific bios setting/updates to Bios?

Re: Linux/Ubuntu on Ideapad 330s 15ARR

I didn't, firmly sold on KDE :-)
The DE shouldn't make a difference though. Didn't go through any other additional steps. Touchpad worked out of the box.
By the way our 330S is a 15IKB, not sure if this makes a difference.

Re: Linux/Ubuntu on Ideapad 330s 15ARR

I have the same problems, and to fix the trackpad issue I have installed Debian 9 and next the latest Linux kernel. But if I try to install the Nvidia's drivers I have problems with the kernel. So I will reinstall debian and wait for a less problematic driver :-/. Ps : Tell us if Kubuntu works fine.

Re: Linux/Ubuntu on Ideapad 330s 15ARR

Yes it's just kernal version and driver issue, I have made a step by step guide to solve all the known problems related to ideapad 330 ubuntu.

Check
gist.github.com/debojyoti/228729498628e898497557db57619a28

No need to compile kernal at all, new versions of kernal already have all the drivers. Check my link
