Hi! I've just bought T500 Thinkpad and installed Ubuntu 8.10 on it. I don't know what's going on but it works only 1h 50min with my standard 6-cell battery(lenovo promises 5.9h at the official site) Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
I read the message below about SL300 that lives 1h 40min with the 4-cell battery. CPU Freq shows only 800 MHz. According to "powertop" I have about 3 hours but laptop works the same 1h and 50 min(according my watch) which are shown in the battery monitor of Ubuntu's "Power Management"

does your T500 has two GPUs? If there are two, then try turn off one in your bios, you might get better battery life.
also turn off bluetooth if you don't use it etc.

Yes it does. But even when internal intel card is used battery life is the same: 1h 50min
maybe I don't understand how to switch off one GPU?
This is how "DISPLAY" setting looks like:
Default Primary Video Device [PCI Express]
Boot Display Device [ThinkPad LCD]
Graphics Device [Discrete]
OS Detection for Switchable Graphics [Disabled]

your setting seems correct.
it is strange that you said the batter life with Intel or discreted GPU is the same.
My thinkpad W500 with Intel GPU lasts about 1 hour longer.
try switch to internal GPU, and do you feel your T500 much hotter in Linux compare to run on Windows? If so, then I think maybe both GPUs are still on.
you might feel warm when T500 runs with internal GPU, but definitely not hot.
by the way, if the manual says T500 can reach 5.9 hours with 6cell battery, then I will think 3-4 hours might be a reasonable guess in practical usage.

Unfortunately(?) I never had Windows on this machine and can not compare.
And how to switch 2nd GPU off in BIOS? I thought what I've done is enough(settings I posted above)... Furthermore, Powertop shows only 14-17 W of power usage. What is strange that Ubuntu's Power Management shows 1h 40min and powertop shows 2-3 hrs but computer works (according to watch) the same 1h 40min
Laptop is warm rather than hot. And if I could get even 3-4 hours I'd be happy.

I'm also running ubuntu 8.10 on a T500. I'm also disappointed by the battery life. Regarding your BIOS settings, you need to select "Integrated", and in the "Power" settings choose "Maximum Battery". This helps a little.
