I think the title says it all. I'm using the Thinkpad X1 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed, and the fan noise is just horrible. Without thinkfan enabled, it stays at 4000 rpm all the time. I have now enabled thinkfan and am using the standard settings. With these, the fan will go off even during browsing, when opening Thunderbird etc.
Can a Lenovo person tell me what Thinkfan thresholds are safe to use with the Thinkpad X1? Or even better, provide me with a principled solution?
I've really liked this notebook, but the fan just totally destroys my positive opinion.
Thanks.

A daemon which regulates fan has to be installed. Thinkfan comes with the Ubuntu 12.04 repositories. Once installed you have to set it up following these instructions http://thinkwiki.de/Thinkfan or some similar (as those are in German).
It works nice for my X1.

What thresholds are you using? I don't want to ruin my device just because Lenovo is not willing to help us.
